Because of this, the carbon-fibre structure of a car could act as a battery, holding charge for the electric motors.

2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter review

2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class added to Takata recall

Mercedes-Benz has added the 2012 C-Class to the ever-expanding Takata recall, with a campaign involving 11,629 vehicles. As with all vehicles caught in the Takata recall, a combination of heat and humidity can make the airbag propellant degrade over time. Just 17 per cent of people favoured the A110 over the Cayman, one the largest margin we've seen since starting the polls earlier this year.

Featuring a closed-over grille and a blue outline for the traditional pony badge, there's no doubt it features some form of electric power.

2019 Jeep Wrangler review: Tacos, burgers and surfboards in SoCal

One of the world’s most closely guarded secrets is when the next Land Rover Defender might appear and what it will look like. No-one seems to know anything, not a single solitary thing. Not when, what, where or how. Nothing. For years, it’s been a total information lockdown, as if Britain’s domestic spy agency, MI5, is running the communications department up at Land Rover’s HQ in Gaydon – at least as far as the next-generation Defender goes.

2018 Peugeot 308 Allure review

In Australia, the small passenger car segment has long been amongst the most competitive, despite a recent slide in volume as customers continue to migrate to SUVs. More than 20 different models compete in this market dominated by the top-selling Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, and Hyundai i30. One of the smaller players – at least in terms of volume – in this class is the Peugeot 308, which was refreshed at the end of last year after first going on sale locally in 2014.

2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport review

If you’re like me, you’re probably mystified by the current trend with carmakers to build even sportier SUVs that sit alongside more practical versions of exactly the same thing. Either way, it’s all the rage now, at least with the German brands. Audi has taken to using even numbers for its racier family haulers such as the Q2 and upcoming Q8, whereas BMW is already well on the way with X2, X4 and X6 models taking up the pointy end of performance.

2019 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport review: is it enough?

There’s no doubt the new 2019 BMW X4 is a vastly improved thing over its predecessor. In fact, I’d go one better than that and say it’s probably the closest thing yet to a BMW sedan experience from an SUV in this segment.

Jaguar XE SV Project 8 and 300 Sport go to the beach - video

Jaguar took the XE to its logical extreme with the Project 8, squeezing a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine making 441kW and 700Nm under the mid-sized sedan's body. Unfortunately, very few were built. Just 300 left-hook examples rolled forth from the factory, making it a seriously rare cat.

2017-18 Mercedes-Benz E-Class recalled

Mercedes-Benz Australia has issued a recall for the E-Class sold between 2017 and 2018 over concerns the active bonnet may not operate as intended. 2018 Hyundai i30 Premium petrol review

We know the Hyundai i30 is great in entry-level Go trim, and we know it's a riot as a Golf GTI-baiting i30 N. Sitting somewhere between the two, in price at least, is the Premium petrol. Exclusively available to diesel buyers until a mid-year range refresh, Hyundai now offers the base 2.0-litre petrol engine in Premium trim. Priced from $32,790 before on-roads, it undercuts the oiler by a handy $1800.

Hyundai i30 Premium petrol review: Good value, but...

Like the wider range, the Hyundai i30 Premium petrol is practical, reasonable to run and has a five-year warranty, which is a handy boost over the three years of coverage offered by Subaru, Toyota and Volkswagen.

2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 132TSI v Mazda CX-5 Touring AWD comparison

The medium-SUV segment is now, along with dual-cabs, the 'real Australia' battleground for buyers down under. A well-worn cliché, sure ('real Australia' I mean), but with the demise of the large sedan as the go-to vehicle of choice for Aussies, it's now medium SUVs that serve duty as family transport in suburbs across our wide brown land.

In case you’re wondering, yes, this new Mercedes-AMG E53 is the replacement for the E43 AMG gone by. If you happen to own one of those, it’s now a collectible of some kind… Sort of. Since the numbers at the end of AMG models seem to have no actual correlation to anything comprehensible, given there was a time when 55 meant a 5.5-litre engine or 63 meant an (almost) 6.3-litre engine, we may as well embrace the 53 nomenclature now.

"My expectation was that we were going to have a time when we have some major issues and we have to solve them," Moers said.

2018 Holden Colorado LT review

Whereas the Toyota comes across as something of a salt-of-the-earth offering, thanks in part to its ubiquity on fleets, the Mazda cuts a more striking figure as a lure to private buyers seeking something more aspirational.

2020 Porsche 911 GT3 spied at the Nurburgring

The new '992' Porsche 911 GT3 has been spied at the Nurburgring this week, spotted with its production body for the first time. 2018 Kia Stinger diesel review

Mike Duff • There are many diesels that we should regret the capricious powers of market forces denying us. The Kia Stinger CRDi is not one of these. While the rest of the Stinger remains a stylish and compelling proposition, the compression-ignition variant—available exclusively in Europe—lacks much of the dynamic sparkle that makes its gasoline-powered siblings such characterful companions.

Audi used fake VINs in South Korean emissions cheating scheme - report

More details are starting emerge about Audi and its use of fake and duplicate VINs (vehicle identification numbers) in South Korea. In a surprise to no-one, it's Dieselgate-related. In August 2017 it was revealed Audi used duplicate VINs on thousands of cars exported to China, South Korea, and Japan – quite why it had done so wasn't clear, though. Now, the Suddeutsche Zeitung claims it was probably part of an effort to sell non-compliant models in South Korea.

The rule of signs

They really must be taking the piss. There cannot be any other reason for it. It has to be a glorious in-joke, for sure. I refer to those stern ‘Roadworks Ahead’ signs whose Pavlovian demands silently relegate vast stretches of empty highway to 40km/h.

Built to celebrate the company's 50th birthday, the Rock Star has a completely unique body, with the exception of the doors and windscreen.

2019 Ford Ranger XLT review: 2.0 Bi-Turbo

Raptor power comes to the mainstream Ford Ranger line-up for the 2019 model year. Now, that would be an impressive point, if the new 2.0-litre biturbo engine wasn’t only incrementally more powerful than the 3.2-litre engine it sits alongside. Be that as it may, the updates for the 2019 Ranger aren’t limited to the introduction of a new 157kW/500Nm engine and 10-speed automatic, available as an option on XLT and Wildtrak trims.

McLaren Senna vs 720S - which is more fun?

There are good days at the office, and then there are days where your only job is to thrash a pair of McLaren supercars around a scenic, coastal circuit. The team at Autocar has been putting the 720S head-to-head with its more expensive, track-focused sibling lately, but the comparison has been purely numbers-based. 2018 Peugeot 208 GTi Édition Définitive review

The Peugeot 208 GTi tends to fly under the radar in the light-hot-hatch segment, overshadowed by the popularity of rivals like the Ford Fiesta ST, Renault Clio RS and Volkswagen Polo GTI. However, that's not necessarily due to a lack of talent or specification. In fact, the hottest 208 is actually one of the most powerful vehicles in its class.

Briannen's Beetle: Meet the 16-year old who is restoring her first car

When I was 16-years old, I bought my first car, a green 1964 Volkswagen Beetle. I paid $800 for it. It needed a tune-up and a polish, and over the next 12 months, I helped my Dad get ‘Bertie’ up and running. It was a car that niggled its way into my heart and it's the car started my Volkswagen obsession. I remember crying two years later as I watched it drive away for the last time with its new owner, ironically a 16-year old girl.
