Wireless EV charging and auto parking tech combined in car trials

We usually talk about electric vehicles (EVs) as vehicles that need plugging in. But wireless charging pads are also being used commercially, and have great potential. Another is that a receiving vehicle’s underbody charging plates must be precisely aligned to receive airborne charge.

Toy time warp: Micro Machines make a return

2020 BMW X5 M review

The BMW X5 M was one of the pioneers of the super-fast SUV segment, but cars like this are still an engineering marvel. How anyone can make a 2.3-tonne lump of metal slip through the air like a teardrop – even though it has the aerodynamic efficiency of a block of flats – boggles the mind.

And then you look under the bonnet and discover what’s been done to counteract the laws of physics.

The car names you've probably been mispronouncing this whole time

Fancy yourself a car enthusiast? While being an enthusiastic car owner and a good driver are both part of your overall street cred, a lot of it comes down to being able to talk the torque. And where many of us can come undone when showing off our automotive prowess is butchering the pronunciation of brand or model names as badly as Kim from Kath & Kim used to pronounce 'chardonnay' (she said 'kar-don-aye', for the record).

2019 Audi Q7 50TDI long-term review: Introduction

The current-generation Audi Q7 is holding its age well, even though it went on sale five years ago. While not everyone is a fan of its bold design, there’s no mistaking its road presence. Fortunately, the box-like shape is an efficient way to create a lot of space. The Audi Q7 is huge, and a genuine seven-seater that can carry a full load of occupants and their luggage.

Finally we can say "Oh what a feeling!"

CarAdvice understands even the most senior Holden executives in Australia were kept in the dark and not told of General Motors’ plan until less than a fortnight ago.

How the Holden Commodore ute helped create the new Chevrolet Corvette

It was late 2014 and General Motors was about to wheel out one of the most important prototypes in the company’s history, deep inside one of its top secret US test tracks. One of the first running examples of a hand-built mid-engine Corvette prototype was about to do a shakedown run – hidden underneath what from a distance was supposed to look like a Holden Commodore ute. It was the perfect disguise, or so General Motors thought.

2020 Ram 1500 Laramie EcoDiesel review

If you’ve read our previous 2020 Ram 1500 reviews, you’ll know we’re fans of the full-size US pick-up in RHD guise. Not for everyone, sure, but for the right buyer they make a hell of a lot of sense. If you’re towing, live in rural areas, or simply need the room afforded by a US truck, there’s nothing that compares.

The new classics: the cars becoming collector's items

As far as investments go, there's little doubt classic cars are one of the most fun. As it turns out, they're not too shabby as a financial decision too. According to a recent AXA XL Art & Lifestyle insurance report on the global classic car market from 2018 to 2019, classic cars have remained stable "against a backdrop of widespread depreciation in passion assets". Specifically, the AXA report noted "an escalation in demand for instant classic cars built over the last 10 years".

2021 BMW M5 spied winter testing

BMW’s newest iteration of its M5 has been spotted during winter testing before an expected unveiling later this year. As previously reported, the 2021 M5 seems to take many of its exterior styling cues from the most recent 3 Series, with slim headlights and LED daytime-running lights making an appearance. The new M5 also appears to have ducked the controversial new kidney grille design that's expected to dominate the front end on the new M4.

Polestar Precept teased before unveiling next week, 2020 Geneva motor show after

Volvo’s performance electric and hybrid brand Polestar has teased its new Precept model, before a dedicated unveiling event and 2020 Geneva motor show showing. The single image released by Polestar shows only the top-down outline of headlights and taillights on an otherwise obscured Precept. There is not a lot insofar as detail in the teaser, however there is room for speculation. Polestar’s parent company Volvo is slated to release its first electric model, the XC40 Recharge in 2021.

The 708kW Ford Shelby Mustang that's on our wish list

A tuning company in the USA has made the Shelby Mustang GT350 even more of a weapon, modifying its engine so it’s capable of reaching 100km/h in 2.5 seconds – one second quicker than standard. Fathouse Fabrications in Indiana uses a base car not available in Australia, the 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 – and it's produced some incredible performance figures from the car's 5.2-litre V8 engine, naming the car Shelby GT350 1000R.

2020 BMW Z4 sDrive20i manual review

We talk a lot about niche cars. Four-door coupes, swoopy shooting brakes, sloping-roofed crossovers – they all exist to plug a very small gap in the market. But those niches pale in comparison to the niche filled by the 2020 BMW Z4 sDrive20i manual. Not only is it a premium two-seat convertible, it has a manual transmission. This isn't a mass-market warrior, it's quite possibly one of the most niche vehicles available in Australia. And it's going to make a small group of people very happy.

2021 Volkswagen Arteon R spied

Volkswagen appears to be working on a powered-up version of its Arteon four-door coupe. A prototype snapped with big wheels and brakes, and an angry-looking exhaust system, is a strong indicator the car could get a proper performance flagship to sit above the 206TSI R-Line. The biggest indicators as to the Arteon's performance potential is the bigger brakes. The oversized rotors are drilled and the calipers are blue, the latter of which is a Golf R calling card.

Hyundai Europe has revealed its brand-new i20 city car with claimed best-in-class safety and infotainment tech, and a 48V mild-hybrid engine. But it’s not coming to Australia, just like its predecessor. This situation feels incongruous given the first-generation model, sourced from India, was a regular top-seller here.

2020 BMW Z4 sDrive20i v Toyota GR Supra GT comparison

They’re twins under the skin and both famous nameplates. But if you’re after the best driver’s car for about $90,000, do you pick the German roadster or Japanese coupe?

Honda Civic Type R Sport Line: Subtler super hatch not for Australia

Honda has revealed a more subtle version of its Civic Type R hot hatch, but it won't be heading for Australia. Although it maintains powertrain for which the Type R has been lauded, the Sportline is aimed at a slightly different market to the standard car or the Limited Edition released yesterday. For one, it ditches the oversized rear wing in place of a more subtle lip spoiler on the bootlid. The car is still no shrinking violet, but the more subtle look will no doubt broaden its appeal.

It’s not the first of its breed, however; the Nissan enters an establishment of utes already vying for the top of the market. We’ve got two direct competitors for the Nissan to lock horns with: Ford’s Ranger Raptor and Holden Special Vehicles’ Colorado SportsCat.

Bentley Continental GT Mulliner Convertible revealed

Bentley's bespoke division has given the Continental GT Convertible a makeover ahead of its 2020 Geneva motor show debut. It’s amazing how quickly the good things in life become our new normal, and we soon lust after something better. They couldn’t get to their nearest Ford dealership fast enough to put down a deposit on the car of their dreams.

2020 MG HS review

We test MG's latest SUV offering and see how it performs in Australian conditions.

2020 MG HS review

This year marks an important milestone in the rebirth of the MG brand, and without doubt, the 2020 MG HS is the best vehicle the now Chinese-owned company has offered to our local market. MG product has been getting more accomplished for some time, as our testing has indicated, but the HS is some measure ahead of anything we’ve tested before. In fact, I’d say it’s the best executed Chinese-built vehicle I’ve tested.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio: Buyer test drives [sponsored]

Sponsored by: Alfa Romeo When you hear the name Alfa Romeo, you most likely picture an Italian sports car; that while great to drive, might not be the most sensible solution for your daily life. But the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a modern, functional SUV that still looks like a glamourous Italian sports car, remains great to drive, and makes much more sense on the school run.

Aston Martin: No Time To Die

I'm in Italy but Daniel Craig isn't. The British actor is somewhere else in the huge global logistics effort that is No Time To Die, the 25th officially sanctioned James Bond film, most likely delivering lines on a soundstage with the rugged understatement that has made him one of the better regarded 007s. He'll be here next week, in the spectacular city of Matera, much of which has pretty much been carved from solid rock - meaning that the second unit have a huge amount to get through before he arrives.

Ford’s constant onslaught of model updates, refreshes and special editions for its Ranger ute continues, and now buyers have the option of the 2020 Ford Ranger FX4. Unlike the Ranger Raptor, and the FX4 pack that Ford utes get in America, this is more of a black-pack aesthetic treatment to an XLT-specification Ranger. It’s priced from $59,140, which plonks it beyond the XLT ($56,640) and just shy of the Wildtrak ($61,490).

The origins of the 'Lion' logo

It’s a logo instantly recognisable to most Australians, a proud lion rolling a stone, its stoic and regal posture adorning millions of cars made by General Motors Holden. The Lion symbol is as recognisable as the cars it appears on, has appeared on in a history stretching back almost 100 years. But how did it come to be? And who was responsible for the original design? To answer those questions, we need to go back to 1927.

2020 Audi RSQ3 review

I find it intriguing when anyone reviews a 'sports SUV' and attempts to justify its execution. Sure, no one needs an Audi RSQ3, but that’s not really the point, is it? Surely? No one needs a Porsche 911, Lamborghini Huracan, or a 6.2-litre rear-wheel drive V8 either, but that doesn’t stop most of us lusting after any of the above. Funnily, many of those sports SUV detractors seem to opine a Porsche Macan is the panacea. Funny that…

Farewell Holden: 1856-2020

From humble beginnings as a saddle manufacturer, to becoming a subsidiary of global automotive giant General Motors and one of the top-selling brands in Australian automotive history, today we take a moment's silence for the death of Australia’s longest-running carmaker. The Holden brand has been a household name in Australia for as long as any living inhabitant can recall, but today the carmaker confirmed it will be ceasing all operations by the end of 2020.

Holden axed in Australia as General Motors gets out of right-hand-drive globally

Holden will be axed in Australia at the end of 2020 – just three years after the end of local manufacturing and the lowest monthly sales since it was established in 1948 – as US car giant General Motors gets out of right-hand-drive markets globally. Although Holden had been posting record low sales – which led to the end of the Commodore and Astra models late last year – the announcement has still come as a shock to industry veterans now the brand has lost its final lifeline.

Holden by the numbers: the highs and lows since 1948

Compiled by Joshua Dowling 1948: The year the first Holden-badged car rolled off the production line. 1954: One in three cars on the road is a Holden. 1958: One in two cars on the road is a Holden. 1960: The first Holden left-hand-drive export began when the FB model was sent to Hawaii. 1962: The 1 millionth Holden is made since 1948, an EJ model. 1969: First Australian-made V8, Holden tops 2 million vehicles made since 1948.

The man who saved Holden four times in 10 years, but was beaten in the end

COMMENT Former Holden boss Mark Reuss, now the global head of General Motors product development, is too humble to admit it, but he saved Holden – and gave the company an opportunity to pull itself out of a nosedive – on at least four significant occasions in the past 12 years. When he was the boss of Holden from 2008 to 2009, he brokered the deal between Detroit and the Australian Federal Government to install the Cruze small car on the production line alongside the locally-made Commodore.

Where did it all go wrong for Holden?

COMMENT Like all major disasters, the demise of Holden after 72 years in Australia is the result of a vast number of factors – some of which were out of its control. The problems go way beyond the use of the Commodore name on the imported model after local manufacturing ended in 2017 (the name probably helped not hindered sales), or the series of misguided TV advertisements and billboards that tried to radically change Holden’s image to appeal to a more cosmopolitan audience.

Holden history: from the beginning to the end

General Motors has sold cars in Australia since 1902, setting up an Oldsmobile dealer north west of Adelaide – which continues to sell Holdens today. However, the US giant first became involved with Holden in 1924. At the time Holden was a motor body builder, fitting its designs to other car brand’s chassis, graduating to this new fangled form of transportation after starting as a saddlery in 1856.

2020 Porsche 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 review

When Porsche made the paradigm shift in powertrain format for its 718 Cayman GTS and Boxster GTS twins, its choice of Estoril Circuit in Portugal was a wise one. The racetrack’s flowing mix of fast and tight corners, and near-kilometre-long pit straight, allowed what’s a return to naturally aspirated motivation, by way of high-revving 4.0-litre boxer power paired exclusively with a six-speed manual gearbox, to be exercised and demonstrated to its fullest, driven as intended.

Conspicuously, petrol fours arrived and diesels went, but also the initially biturbo 3.0-litre and 3.6-litre petrol V6s in other versions made way for single-turbo 3.0s and biturbo 2.9s in today's facelifted fleet.
