Toyota GR86 turbo revealed with all-wheel drive, but you can’t buy one
Turbo three-cylinder power and all-wheel drive have come to the Toyota GR86 sports coupe, but it is not destined for showrooms.
The Toyota GR86 sports car has been given a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive makeover – inspired by iconic Celica GT-Four rally cars of the 1990s – but it is just a concept built for the SEMA trade expo in Las Vegas.
Known as the Rally Legacy Concept, the special GR86 is fitted with the 1.6-litre turbo three-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive system from the GR Corolla and GR Yaris hot hatches.
It is strictly a one-off prototype inspired by Toyota’s rally heritage, including the ST185 and ST205 Celica GT-Four coupes that won multiple World Rally Championships.
Reports out of Japan have claimed, however, that the next-generation GR86 will shed its Subaru BRZ twin and fit a hybridised, rear-wheel-drive version of the GR Corolla’s engine.

The concept is not the first turbo GR86 – a smaller 1.4-litre version of the GR Corolla engine has been fitted to the car for racing in Japan – but it is the first with the ‘G16E-GTS’ engine and all-wheel drive.
The 1.6-litre turbo engine was not a straight swap into the GR86’s body, as it is an upright inline engine – the pistons in its cylinders moving vertically – rather than horizontally like the standard car’s 2.4-litre ‘boxer’ engine.
Toyota says the concept gains a custom front subframe and engine mounts, as well as “some modification” of its chassis, to give the engine enough clearance around the suspension.
The GR86 was adapted to support the GR Corolla’s hubs, spindles and axles to send power to the front wheels, while coil-over dampers, custom control arms and a modified steering rack were also fitted.

At the rear, the GR Corolla’s rear differential has been added – with the hot hatch’s standard gear ratios, electronics and front-to-rear power split – plus components of its rear axle.
The 1.6-litre turbo engine develops the same 224kW/370Nm as the GR Corolla, but it gains an oil cooler, upgraded intercooler, and a motorsport engine control unit (ECU).
Toyota hints “there is the potential to increase these [power and torque] numbers with further tuning.”
The Rally Legacy show car is finished in Halo White with a red and green livery inspired by the Castrol wrapping of classic Celica GT-Four rally cars, plus a tall rear spoiler inspired by the original.

Other exterior changes include red mudflaps, Speedline wheels wrapped in Michelin tyres, rally lights, and a custom exhaust that exits where the road car’s number plate would sit.
Inside, the cabin has been stripped to fit a full white-painted roll cage, plus racing seats with red six-point harnesses, a Sparco steering wheel, and racing gauges.
The Toyota GR86 Rally Legacy concept will be shown at the SEMA automotive aftermarket trade show this week in Las Vegas.
