Tesla Model 3, Model Y poised for imminent battery upgrade – report
Larger batteries are reportedly inbound for the cheapest – and most popular – Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric-car variants.
The most popular versions of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y electric cars are poised to gain the biggest upgrades to their power systems in three years, according to new reports.
The entry-level Model 3 and Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive are reportedly slated for an imminent battery upgrade in Europe delivering higher energy density and a mild boost in driving range.
It is according to @eivissacopter, a Europe-based X (formerly Twitter) user with a strong track record for unearthing information on future Tesla models – most recently the seven-seat Model Y for Europe – through government databases.

The new battery – reportedly due to debut on the Model 3 sedan – will be the first of its kind in four years, and the Model 3’s first since its major facelift last year that boosted driving range through sleeker aerodynamics and new tyres, rather than a battery bump.
Australian plans are yet to be confirmed, but Model 3s sold locally are sourced from the same Chinese factory as European versions – and currently share their batteries with European examples.
A release date in Europe for the longer-range Model 3 RWD is yet to be confirmed, but the user speculates it could occur “as soon as mid-November”.
According to the X user, the new battery is still supplied by Chinese company CATL, but ups its net capacity from 60kWh to 62.5kWh.

It is said to use either lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or new lithium manganese iron phosphate (LMFP) chemistry, and has the same number of cells (108) as the current 60kWh pack.
The first model to use the new battery will reportedly be the Model 3 RWD sedan, which is slated to carry a 520km driving range rating based on European testing – up from 513km currently.
As with all but one Tesla model on sale in Europe – a new Model 3 Long Range RWD – the range figure is calculated with 19-inch wheels fitted, not the smaller and more efficient 18s, for a more realistic estimate no matter the option boxes a customer ticks.

The Model Y is likely to eventually inherit the new battery, given the technical similarities between the two.
It remains to be seen if Tesla withholds the new battery on the Model Y for its facelift due early next year, codenamed Juniper.
The current rear-wheel-drive Model Y is also available in Europe with a battery sourced from Chinese firm BYD, which the X user speculates the new 62.5kWh CATL pack would also replace. This BYD battery is not fitted to Australian-market cars.
Details of fast charging performance for the new battery are yet to be revealed – the current 60kWh pack can charge at up to 170kW DC – as well as its impact on prices.
According to the X user, the new 62.5kWh battery will be matched with an unchanged 208kW/350Nm electric motor in the Model 3 RWD – fitted since 2021 – which is currently good for 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.1 seconds.
Data seen by @eivissacopter claims the enlarged battery is 1kg lighter than its predecessor, but the vehicle weight listed in European government documents reportedly has not changed.
The small increase in driving range for Tesla’s most affordable car follows weeks after Long Range RWD variants of the Model 3 and Model Y went on sale in Europe, rated for up to 702km of driving range in European WLTP testing.
