2025 MG ES5 electric SUV revealed as ZS EV successor, Australian plans unclear

The replacement for the MG ZS EV has debuted as a higher-riding sibling to the rear-wheel-drive MG 4 hatchback.

The 2025 MG ES5 electric small SUV has been unveiled as a successor to the ZS EV.

A rival to the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia EV3 and Chery Omoda E5, the latest small SUV from MG is based on the dedicated rear-wheel-drive Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) for electric vehicles shared with the MG 4 hatchback.

The ZS small SUV has continued into a new generation with a choice of petrol or hybrid power.

Borrowed from the MG 4 is a 125kW/250Nm electric motor, though it remains to be seen if the ES5 will also match the MG 4 with 150kW/250Nm and 180kW/350Nm in higher-spec variants fed by larger batteries.

Car News China reports the ES5 has a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.0 seconds and a 170km/h top speed.

Overseas reports indicate the ES5 features a 49.1kWh or 62.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack enabling an electric driving range of 425km, 515km or 525km in Chinese CLTC testing, which is less stringent than the WLTP protocols used in Europe and common in Australia.

The ES5’s lithium iron phosphate batteries are reportedly assembled through a joint venture between MG’s parent company SAIC and battery manufacturer CATL, with a 110-millimetre thickness said to make the batteries some of the world’s thinnest for an electric vehicle.

A more sophisticated multi-link independent rear suspension design is standard for the ES5 – matching the BYD Atto 3, Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia EV3 – replacing the cheaper-to-make torsion beam in its ZS EV predecessor.

The ES5 includes a split headlight design, a lower air intake, gloss-back side mirror caps, silver roof rails, a full-width rear light strip with similar Y-shaped tail-lights to the MG 4, and a choice of 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior features a large touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, flat-bottom steering wheel with similar controls to the MG 4 and new ZS, column-mounted gear selector, wireless phone charger, and panoramic sunroof.

Safety equipment fitted to the ES5 has not been announced, however it is likely to add more advanced features unavailable in the current ZS EV, as MG says it is targeting a five-star safety rating in Europe.

Measuring 4476mm long, 1849mm wide and 1621mm tall, with a 2730mm wheelbase, the MG ES5 is 153mm longer, 40mm wider and at least 4mm lower than the ZS EV, with a 145mm longer wheelbase.

The 2025 MG ES5 is expected to arrive in local showrooms sometime next year. Drive has contacted MG Motor Australia for comment on the new model.

VFACTS new-car sales data reveals 1003 examples of the MG ZS EV have been registered in Australia between January and September 2024, compared to 4926 BYD Atto 3s, 3772 MG 4s, and 1159 Hyundai Kona Electrics.
