Electric car maker Lucid teases Tesla Model Y rival

California-based electric car maker Lucid will start producing a rival to the Tesla Model Y in late 2026 with a $US50,000 starting price.

Lucid Motors has teased a new electric midsize SUV ahead of its launch in the United States in late 2026.

The California-based electric car maker – which currently sells the Tesla Model S-rivalling Air sedan and Tesla Model X-rivalling Gravity SUV – said the new midsize SUV, a competitor to the popular Tesla Model Y, will use a newly-developed platform intended for smaller vehicles.

Lucid says the starting price of its new car will be targeted at under $US50,000 ($AU75,000), with the Model Y currently priced from $US44,990 ($AU67,000) in the United States.

“The new crossover will use the efficiency and cost advantages enabled by Lucid technology to deliver the same range as competitors while using a smaller battery,” said Lucid in a media release.

The first Lucid vehicle – the Air sedan – rolled off its assembly line in Arizona in October 2021, while the Gravity is due to commence production later this year.

However, Lucid vehicles are unlikely to enter Australian showrooms in the near future with production currently limited to left-hand drive.

In July 2023, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson told UK publication Auto Express he’d “love to” make Lucid vehicles in right-hand drive, but the start-up is currently “slammed” with the development of its upcoming models.

“It’s a matter of engineering priorities. We are slammed – we’ve got to get Sapphire out [in 2023]. Sapphire is our tri-motor version of the Air, our performance version – we’re testing that on the road now and it’s getting from zero to 60 in 1.89 seconds,” Mr Rawlinson told the UK magazine.

“And we’ve got to get Gravity out [in 2024].

“It breaks my heart, maybe we can outsource [the] right-hand-drive project to an engineering company to do it for us. The potential market in the UK is probably bigger than even Germany in terms of a latent desire to go [electric].”

The list of rivals to the Tesla Model Y – which was the world’s best-selling vehicle in 2023– continues to grow as more carmakers aim to obtain a slice of the midsize electric SUV market.

In Australia, new alternatives to the Model Y confirmed for launch include the Kia EV5, Volkswagen ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, Cupra Tavascan, Xpeng G6, Skywell ET5, Aion V, Geely EX5, Zeekr 7X and Smart #5 – along with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and more already on sale.
