Chef Jamie Oliver puts his Ford Capri on the chopping block

The celebrity chef is ready to serve up his classic Ford Capri after spending big bucks on the two-door sports car.

A classic Ford Capri sports car belonging to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is due to go under the hammer later this month in the UK.

Listed on ClassicCarAuctions.co.uk, the 1970 Ford Capri 3000 GT Mark I is believed to be one of only 31 remaining on UK (United Kingdom) roads.

It is said to have been in Oliver’s hands for more than a decade, in which time he has reportedly spent more than £20,000 ($AU39,000) restoring it to its current condition.

The car appeared on screen during the Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast TV show on multiple occasions and is one of three vehicles the chef is sending to auction – the others being a 1955 Fiat 1100 and a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle 1500 Convertible.

The Ford Capri 3000 GT – the number referring to the model’s 103kW 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine – was a performance model with the largest, most powerful engine in the line-up at the time.

The rear-wheel drive sports car is a two-plus-two – meaning four seats – and has a black vinyl interior with sports seats, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, woodgrain effect trim and sports instruments, including a tachometer.

A three-speed automatic was optional, but Oliver’s example is the more desirable four-speed manual version, which according to Ford advertising at the time, saw off 0-97km/h (60mph) in 9.2 seconds.

Oliver is known for his love of cars, with the Capri included in a 2023 article by British newspaper The Sun which reported the chef purchased it for £6000 ($AU11,800) in 2011 as only its second owner.

Despite the spend since, the estimated sale price of the car is between £22,000 and £26,000 ($AU43,000 and $AU51,000) which would see the celebrity chef break even at best.

The return of the Capri name was confirmed by Ford when it revealed a new battery-electric mid-size family SUV wearing the badge in July 2024.

The new Capri – which is not expected to be sold locally – is the fourth-generation vehicle since the name was introduced more than fifty years ago.

Almost 2 million Capris were produced across three generations between 1968 and 1986, the Ford Cortina-based model serving as an affordable sports car pitched at younger buyers.

The first-generation Capri was sold in Australia between 1969 and 1974 – including the 3000 GT – with the second and third generations not offered locally.

The name returned to local showrooms for an affordable convertible sports car – a rival to the Mazda MX-5 – manufactured in Australia and based on the front-wheel drive Ford Laser between 1989 and 1994.
