Tesla Model 3 electric car gains expensive option from Model Y

Most car companies charge $500 to $1000 for premium paint, but Tesla has attached a $2600 price tag to the Model 3’s new Quicksilver paint option.

The Tesla Model 3 has gained a new optional extra from the top-selling Model Y SUV nine months after a comprehensive facelift which brought new styling and technology.

But it is not a piece of technology, or a performance boost – rather a new coat of paint.

The Quicksilver finish introduced by Tesla on the Model Y in Australia earlier this year – and Europe two years ago – is now available on the Model 3 sedan in markets such as Australia, where the Chinese-made version is sold.

It is a $2600 option in Australia, as with the Ultra Red hero colour. White remains the no-cost paint choice, with Stealth Grey, Solid Black and Deep Blue also available as cheaper cost options than silver or red.

Tesla has historically charged far more for its ‘premium’ paint colours than rival brands.

Volvo includes metallic paint in the base price of the EX30, while any gloss colour other than red is only a $520 option on a Kia EV6, and non-white colours cost $1500 extra on a BYD Seal.

Most metallic paint finishes for a BMW i4 electric sedan cost $1850, and even the most expensive Manufaktur paint options on a Mercedes-Benz EQE cost $2900 – slightly more than Tesla’s Quicksilver and Ultra Red on a vehicle twice the price.

There are no other changes to the Tesla Model 3 alongside the addition of Quicksilver, with prices continuing to start from $54,900 plus on-road costs after a reduction in RRPs in May.

The Tesla website says Model 3s ordered in Quicksilver are estimated to see delivery in October or November for the Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range, or between October and December for the Performance.

Selecting any other colour could see delivery as soon as this month, likely given there is ample stock in the country – or en route – to fill customer orders.

The US electric-car giant offers buyers few options to personalise their vehicle – exterior colour, interior colour and wheels – allowing it to streamline production, and make it more likely there is a car in stock to match a new order.
