Video: New Top Gear spin-off series explores the unrestricted joy of a tunnel run

If you’ve ever lowered a window just to hear what your car sounds like going through a tunnel, this might be the series for you.

The team behind the BBC’s Top Gear television show has launched a new video series on YouTube, dedicated to the ‘tunnel run’ – the practice of winding down the windows and hitting the throttle while driving through a tunnel.

Top Gear has secured exclusive rights to use the Catesby Tunnel – a former railway tunnel built in 1897, spanning 2.7 kilometres – now converted for use as a subterranian vehicle testing facility, analysing performance, aerodynamics, air cooling, and emissions following a multi-million-dollar renovation in recent years.

Vehicles are said to be able to maintain 160km/h for approximately 40 seconds, with a turntable located at the end to allow cars to be spun around to face the exit.

As the first video explains, the private tunnel has “no speed cameras and no neighbours”.

Kicking off the series is the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 Group B – one of the most iconic rally cars in history – and has been followed by the BRM Supercharged V16 F1 car, a Lamborghini Huracan STO, a Caterham 620R, a V12-powered Mercedes-Benz S-Class, a NASCAR, and an Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro.

For those who enjoy whooshy turbo noises, screaming F1 engine sounds, and everything in between, you can watch the playlist on YouTube by clicking here.
