New South Wales driver busted using altered plates

Authorities said they caught the alleged offender excessively speeding in a Holden Commodore while on a suspended licence.

A New South Wales driver was charged with multiple offences after he was caught excessively speeding in a car that had its number plate altered.

According to NSW Highway Patrol’s Facebook post, the 24-year-old was caught in a silver Holden Commodore driving at 120km/h on a signposted 100km/h zone along the M5 Motorway in Revesby, a suburb approximately 22km southwest of Sydney, on 2 June 2024.

Authorities said officers observed the number plates had been changed to display “misleading characters” – with the alleged offender telling police his licence was suspended earlier that day following a failed roadside drug test.

NSW police said the 24-year-old driver failed another drug test following the incident – with officers allegedly finding a small plastic bag “containing a small crystal-like substance” in the vehicle.

The man was detained and taken to Bankstown Police Station where he was further searched for illicit substances.

The alleged offender was charged with multiple offences relating to exceeding the speed limit, driving a car with altered plates, driving on a suspended licence, breaching bail conditions and possession of prohibited drugs.

He has been refused bail and is expected to appear at a local court at an unspecified later date.
