2025 MG HS promised to be a “real MG” despite shared DNA, approved for sale in Australia

MG says its next-generation Toyota RAV4 rival is more than just a rebadge, despite sharing significant DNA with a model sold by its parent company overseas.

MG Australia says the new 2025 MG HS mid-size family SUV is a “pure MG” – despite being a restyle of a model from another brand owned by MG’s parent company – with the first examples due in showrooms later this year.

The new HS has been approved for sale in Australia with 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines – ahead of a plug-in hybrid due at a later date.

It is based on a vehicle sold by MG’s parent company SAIC in its domestic market, the Roewe RX5, with a restyled front fascia, conventional door handles rather than pop-out units, and other MG-specific styling tweaks.

“I think calling it a rebadge is probably doing a bit of injustice to it,” MG Motor Australia general manager of marketing David Hearty told Drive.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into the vehicles we bring here to make sure they are suitable for the market.

“Design language is really important. … When you see that vehicle as a finished product, it is in no way a mismatch. It certainly belongs in the stable.”

MG Motor Australia product manager Akshat Ahuja said: “The new design language that MG 3 showcases, HS also does that. It’s pure MG, fully MG, with all the technology we have in it as well.”

Australian government approval documents show two engines have been certified for sale: a 1.5-litre turbo paired to a dual-clutch transmission, or a 2.0-litre turbo matched with a conventional torque converter nine-speed auto.

The 1.5-litre engine is offered in the Roewe RX5 overseas – where it develops 138kW/300Nm, up from 119kW/250Nm in today’s MG HS – while outputs for the 2.0-litre are not stated in the Australian documents, nor overseas.

Three model variants are listed – provisionally named ‘COM’, ‘DEL’ and ‘LUX’ – with the 1.5-litre available across the range, and the 2.0-litre exclusive to the latter two models.

A plug-in hybrid Plus EV model is expected to join the range at some point – either at launch or slightly later – with a larger battery pack and longer driving range than today’s model.

The overseas-market Roewe RX5 plug-in hybrid has recently been updated with a 21.4kWh battery and 135km electric driving range based on NEDC lab testing – up from a 12.3kWh battery and circa-60km electric range previously.

UK publication Auto Express reports the UK-bound HS plug-in hybrid may offer 70 miles (113km) of electric driving range based on more stringent European WLTP testing.

The RX5 on which the new MG HS is based is about 80mm longer and 15mm wider than today’s MG HS – with the plug-in hybrid version even longer due to different bumpers.
