2021 Hyundai Tucson previewed in new renderings

Between last year's stylised Vision T show car and recent spy photos, there's no great feats of imagination required in guessing at the final design of the new-generation 2021 Hyundai Tucson. Even those pick-up lovin’ Yanks embraced the HiLux through several generations before Toyota released the US-market Tacoma, spelling the end of the HiLux in the US.

2020 Lexus LX570 review

Deadly viruses, bushfires, riots in the streets, mandated social isolation – you've got to be prepared for anything. And anyone familiar with apocalypse movies will know the hero (or heroine) always needs a giant, all-black, 4x4 truck to drive around amid the chaos. Enter, the 2020 Lexus LX570.

2020 Bentley Continental GT V8 review

Grand touring, or as it should always be referred to, gran turismo, is the mastery of travelling great distance in speed, style, comfort and luxury, with at least four seats and room for a couple of overnight bags.

Some online reports have suggested the vehicle is a modified Plymouth Barracuda, however this is incorrect.

If I ran Toyota Gazoo Racing... I'd be phoning Alpine

"If I ran the company..." The CarAdvice team play 'fantasy football' with the automotive industry and take turns in the top seat of the big brands. What would we do if we ran the show? This time, Justin takes over the performance arm of Toyota, Gazoo Racing. I was going to start this piece by saying first, I'd change the name of my newly inherited business – but let's park that. Toyota Gazoo Racing, despite the interesting name, is a fascinating Motorsport enterprise.

Not since Holden put a Commodore badge on a German import has there been such an outcry.

2020 Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior long-term review: Introduction

The 2020 Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior is something of a standout in the dual-cab segment in Australia. Whereas other manufacturers have been happy to release a product and let the aftermarket have its way with it, Nissan Australia decided to engage the aftermarket, allow them to enhance an already solid platform, and then offer it to the consumer with a full factory warranty. From the outset, it seemed like a clever idea.

2020 Lexus ES300h Sports Luxury long-term review: The road trip

Some of my fondest memories as a kid were family road trips. It seems ironic to make this comment now, but travel (by plane) wasn’t as easy – or affordable – back then as it is now. Well, certainly not up until about March 2020, anyway.

While exact details are scarce, it's understood Mazda has added the CX-30 Turbo to dealership documents in the US, according to website CarsDirect. 2021 Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ STI rendered

The second-generation Toyota 86 has lately been stepping out in revealing camouflage, with the latest round of spy photos offering plenty of detail, but there’s still much to be revealed. 2020 Mazda 3 Hybrid review: X20 Astina Skyactiv-X M Hybrid

I'm happy that Mazda is still around and kicking. It could've gone the way of Saab so easily. By that I mean bought by a larger brand, pilfered into oblivion, and either forced into badge-engineering its new master's products or, worse, dissolved.

2020 Mitsubishi Express review: LWB automatic

How many Mitsubishis have an indicator stalk on the left-hand side in Australia? I’m not sure, but I’m guessing it’s a short list. We can officially add one more, however, with the new 2020 Mitsubishi Express van. In particular, we’re behind the wheel of the long-wheelbase Express van with a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine and automatic transmission. Why does a Japanese van have a Euro-style stalk set-up? Simple: this Mitsubishi is a Renault Trafic under the skin.

The pictured car shares distinctive characteristics with the GR Super Sport concept, with a similar sweeping tail and rear wheel arches.

Old Peugeots never die, they just get made in Azerbaijan: Peugeot 405 still in production!

It seems old Peugeots never die, they just get made in Azerbaijan. Late last year it was announced that Iran Khodro Industrial Group would cease the manufacturing of the Peugeot 405 in Iran, ending a 26-year lifespan of a car that had not been built in its native France since 1997. But if 33 years isn’t long enough for the 1988 European Car of the Year to remain in production, the tooling and licence have been sold to the Azerbaijani industrial consortium, Azermash Khazar.

A bright pink McLaren 570S has been extensively damaged in central London after reportedly colliding with a VW Golf. Tesla's Cybertruck could get an electromagnetic windscreen wiper

A new windscreen wiper design – first patented by Tesla in late 2019 – could make its debut on the upcoming Cybertruck. According to the website InsideEVs, the patent lends itself to the flat windscreen fitted to the sharply-creased Tesla pick-up. Rather than pivoting from a fixed point as with a traditional system, the patented design uses an electromagnetic block that moves horizontally across the entire length of the windshield.

Access Denied: The go-anywhere 4x4s perfect for exploring a wide brown land

Call it envy, but knowing your neighbour has something does a lot to make you want the same. The Australian new vehicle market plays host to close to 50 brands that sell cars, SUVs and utes at volume. Then there are van and light commercial brands, low-volume specialist sports car brands, and left-hand drive converters on top. We’re spoilt for choice already. And of course, it’s not enough.

I struggled to wrap my head around the things that my Marina Bay Blue-coloured 2020 BMW X6 M Competition press car was able to do.

2021 Toyota Yaris: What else could you buy for the same money?

Toyota rather rudely shocked Australian new-car buyers with the announcement of its better-equipped but markedly more expensive new Yaris. While Toyota’s pre-launch information hinted at a sizeable step up in technology and safety equipment, few expected the price rise it would take to cover the cost of those inclusions.

Four of those cars finished inside the top five, including the winning #59 car of Lanzante Motorsport, driven by Yannick Dalmas, Masanori Sekiya and J.J. Lehto.

2020 Lexus NX300 Luxury 2WD review

My first thought getting into the 2020 Lexus NX300 Luxury is "Base spec? REALLY?”. For just over $55,000 before on-road costs, the medium SUV offers sumptuous interior styling, plenty of creature comforts, and a bona-fide buffet of driver assistance tech. In fact, it’s so kitted out that it's hard to ascertain what going up a grade could possibly add. The recommended list price for the entry-level, two-wheel-drive NX300 Luxury I'm testing here is $55,700 plus on-road costs.

2021 Alpina XD3 price and specs: new hybrid power for sporty diesel SUV

The 2021 Alpina XD3 is arriving in Australia in early 2021, with buyers now gaining the benefits of a mild-hybrid diesel powertrain. Alpina has a long history of tuning BMW models, carving out a niche between BMW's standard range of products, but below BMW's flagship M performance models. Though the Alpina is again based on the BMW X3 xDrive30d, the new XD3 competes directly with the petrol-powered BMW X3 M40i, with performance, economy, and price roughly on-par.

2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante review

Driving any Aston Martin is a special occasion but driving the 2020 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera Volante on our own local roads is very special indeed. It’s hard to believe that two years has gone by since I was lucky enough to get behind the wheel of the DBS Superleggera coupe on some sensational roads in Germany, and here we are sampling the drop top on local roads. Looking back over my story from that drive, the following paragraph still resonates – no pun intended:

2020 Land Rover Discovery Landmark SDV6 review

There’s an awful lot of chatter over at the Land Rover camp at the moment, with the hugely anticipated 2020 Defender about to roll into showrooms. But the iconic off-road nameplate has been ‘gentrified’ somewhat and is now arguably targeted at the shopping trails as much as it is the bush tracks. With that in mind, the Defender’s most stringent competition might just come from across the showroom floor, from an already urban-friendly, adventure capable machine.

Australian-founded fuel brand Ampol has officially returned to service stations after almost 25 years out of action after opening its first two Ampol-branded stores in the towns of Concord and Granville in New South Wales. The move comes after US oil company Chevron terminated the licensing agreement allowing the use of the Caltex name.

2021 Morgan Plus Four review

Remember 1936? Just in case it’s a bit hazy, here's a quick rundown of the highlights. King George V died, and then after barely getting the throne warm, his son Edward VIII abdicated so he could marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. At the Berlin Olympics, African American Jesse Owens won four gold medals to the obvious displeasure of German Chancellor Adolf Hitler. Closer to home, the last known Tasmanian Tiger died in Hobart Zoo.

Video: 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport long-term review – going off-road

Land Rover is a brand that sells itself on adventure. I don't believe that can be contested. From its depictions in media and communications through to every interactive touch point, be it online or in physical manifestations, this seems to be the case.

Long live the boxy 4x4!

Five years ago, it looked like the days of the boxy four-wheel drive were numbered. Or, at least, consigned to the second-hand classifieds for eternity. While new makes and models are on a constant pilgrimage towards more refinement, safety and modernity, the traditionally uncomplicated four-wheel-drive segment has seemingly been taken up in the current.

2020 Hyundai i30 Premium review

Australians love the Hyundai i30, which remains the second-best-selling passenger car in the country, trailing only the Toyota Corolla on the new-car sales charts. It’s also easily Hyundai’s biggest seller, accounting for around 34 per cent of sales for the Korean brand. Yes, every third Hyundai sold is an i30.

Lexus owner for a day

Buying a new car is a big investment, for most people the second-biggest chunk of money they’ll hand over for something, after the family home. Some manufacturers take your money, sign you up for a service plan, but offer little else in the way of ownership benefits. Others do offer limited ownership programs that can incorporate track days, or special events, or perhaps a discount on merchandise. Lotus is particularly good when it comes to track days.

2020 Mahindra Pik-Up S10+ dual-cab review

One of the recurring themes often heard in motoring circles is that cars have advanced too far for some. There’s a group of traditionalists stuck on the good old days. How advanced is too advanced? Is the idea of being able to twirl the spanners on your own car, if need be, valid – or a touch of misty-eyed nostalgia?

2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport long-term review: Beach driving

Land Rover is a brand that sells itself on adventure. I don't believe that can be contested. From its depictions in media and communications through to every interactive touchpoint, be it online or in physical manifestations, this seems to be the case. A narrative weaved of how its products can enable you to embark on such a caper, when the drag of the nine-to-five comes to an end.

Want an affordable entry into European SUV motoring? Then the $35,990 Skoda Karoq 110TSI finished in Candy white, could be the one for you. Bear in mind that this is national pricing too, not locale-specific by any means. Nor is it a promotional effort either. You can access one at that price for the foreseeable future. The only other Euro that's comparable in price from the same segment is the Renault Koleos Life, which kicks off from around $36k on the road, depending on your location.

REVISIT: 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class review

March 2018: It’s almost futile to attempt to ‘objectively’ assess a vehicle like the peerless 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Does a buyer with anywhere from $200,000–$300,000 to spend really care about objective measurements anyway? Is there any merit in ‘comparing’ a vehicle to others when in reality it effectively sits alone in its class?

2020 Lexus LX450d review

As the SUV evolves, refinement and car-like dynamics have risen as key tenets in vehicle development. Not every SUV follows this path, though, and perhaps one of the most obvious examples comes from Lexus. The flagship LX range errs more on the side of ‘traditional’ SUVs, and the 2020 Lexus LX450d represents the entry point of the range.

2020 BMW X6 XDrive30d review

BMW’s X6 xDrive30d is an interesting proposition. Big – but with a less-than-practical design. An SUV – but without the inherent family-friendly appeal. And, finally, sporty looks – but with a diesel engine. The 2020 X6 is even bigger and more aggressively styled than previous generations, which could diminish its mass appeal even further. Certainly, a first glimpse had me pondering exactly who this car is for.

The muted tones from the exhaust, not entirely dissimilar to a Nissan R35 GT-R or Ford GT, suggest the new engine will likely be turbocharged.

Project Cars: 1988 Lada Niva

I’ve been trying to keep this on the down low but it seems the cat and the bag have separated somewhat, so yes, I have another Niva. And by ‘another’, I mean that this Fern Green 1988 Lada Niva marks the sixth time one of the charismatic Russian 4WDs has ended up in my care. No late-night questionable decision on eBay this time though (Nivas 2 and 3), nor was it a well-meaning but doomed-from-the-start project (Niva 5). No, Niva number six was a generous birthday gift from some friends.

You can read colleague Joshua Dowling's full July VFACTS report here, which goes through the nitty-gritty of the market in great detail. After sifting through the numbers, a few nameplates emerge as having a hard time in the market.

2020 Peugeot Partner review

The changes in how we are living this year have clearly highlighted the requirement for fast and local delivery of food, goods and other supplies. A requirement that is only going to become increasingly more important for small businesses, and there’s no better tool for this than a van. Not a traditional slab-sided cab-over ‘toaster’ mind you, I’m talking about a compact hatch-based city dweller, like the 2020 Peugeot Partner.

2020 Honda HR-V VTi-LX review

Regardless of what you drive, you could be forgiven for suffering from small-SUV fatigue. It feels as though every week there’s a new model announced, or an old model being reinvigorated to vie for our attention. 2020 Honda HR-V VTi-LX review

Amid this onslaught, some viable options can be forgotten in favour of the latest shiny new toy. One such forgotten contender is the 2020 Honda HR-V VTi-LX – an unassumingly attractive car with ample cabin space and a premium equipment offering, all for under $40,000.

The unending allure of the Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series: Market Insights

A few years ago, my wife Michelle and I found ourselves stuck in a small town called Louth, in western New South Wales. About 100 kilometres southwest of Bourke and 820km northwest of Sydney, this little Outback town consists of one great pub (Shindys Inn), and not a lot else. The population of 43 (according to the 2016 Census) mostly live beyond the outskirts of town.

Enjoy them – just not too much, okay?

2021 Bentley Mulliner Bacalar review

The luxury car industry pretty much grew out of the much older trade of coachbuilding. In the early days of motoring, it made perfect sense to buy a car in the same way you would a carriage – commissioning an artisan to build a body to your own tastes, and without having to worry about the grubby bits that held the wheels on and the horsepower (or horse power) that made it go.

Now is the time for more full-size US trucks to be made available in Australia

Close your eyes and you can hear it. It’s coming from everywhere. Even the merest mention of a US pick-up and the whining starts. You know what I mean, the high-pitched baying… “They’re too big!” “Who needs one?” “How ridiculous!” “Why would you want to drive something that big?” “Clogging up city streets in your silly big truck.”

Navman's latest product wants to take on Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

You might assume the rise of smart in-car infotainment systems, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities could spell the end for the manufacturers of external sat-nav devices, but Navman would argue it’s the exact opposite. The Australian/Kiwi-born brand is out to prove it’s far from irrelevant in today’s tech-laden society, with the launch of its new range – led by a multi-tasking hero product it hopes will give modern drivers everything they need and more.

The Audi A5 range of Coupes, Sportbacks and Cabriolets that shares its platform with the A4 range. Audi has refreshed the A5 range for the 2021 model year, alongside its facelift for the A4 range. However, unlike the A4 range that is more affordable across the board, all A5 variants see a modest price hike.

2021 Isuzu D-Max price and specs: First new model in almost a decade

The Isuzu D-Max ute – which built its reputation with a no-frills approach and an agricultural design – has undergone a transformation not seen since Shane Warne started dating Liz Hurley. From knockabout to new-age, simple to sophisticated. The first completely new Isuzu D-Max in almost a decade has been transformed from a no-nonsense pick-up to one of the most advanced utes in its class.

What I love about the new Isuzu D-Max – and jobs for the facelift

Rarely does a vehicle come from the back of the pack – on paper at least – to the top of the class. But that’s what has happened with the 2021 Isuzu D-Max. To be frank, I didn’t know Isuzu was capable of such a massive leap. More fool me. After years of banging on about all the things the previous Isuzu D-Max lacked – basics such as Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, dusk-sensing headlights – I had low expectations for the new model.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: A mechanical deep-dive into the new-gen ute

After six years of development, the all-new 2021 Isuzu D-Max has finally landed in Australia. Taking over from the long-serving and outgoing model (which arrived way back in 2012), this new model enters a segment that’s more competitive than ever. Aside from the big jumps in terms of safety, interior and technology, the 2021 Isuzu D-Max also brings a lot of changes and updates under the skin. In this instalment, we look into the new nuts and bolts of the new D-Max.

2021 Mazda BT-50 due October: What Isuzu D-Max means for its twin under the skin

The 2021 Mazda BT-50 is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in October, however not all models will be available from launch. Mazda dealers have told CarAdvice there will initially be three model grades of the 2021 Mazda BT-50 double cab: XT, XTR and GT, the same as the outgoing model. They will be followed by the two-door “space cab” BT-50 models – which Mazda calls “Freestyle” – in December 2020 or January 2021.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: What each model offers

The 2021 Isuzu D-Max is available in four model grades – SX, LS-M, LS-U and X-Terrain – and three body styles: single cab, space cab and double cab. The previous base model, the $26,990 drive-away SX single cab-chassis 4x2 with “low rider” suspension (and which only had a 2.5-tonne towing capacity) has been deleted. Significantly, every model grade in the 2021 Isuzu D-Max line-up – from the base model cab-chassis with a dropside tray, to the new flagship X-Terrain – will come with advanced safety features, giving buyers in all price ranges access to the latest tech.

2021 Isuzu D-Max prices rise by up to $8100, targets Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger

The 2021 Isuzu D-Max is the most advanced ute in its class, but the leap in technology has brought significant price rises that put it in a head-on battle with the top-selling Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger. The Isuzu D-Max already outsells the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger in Thailand – where all three utes are made for the Asia-Pacific region – and now the company is taking aim at the big guns in Australia.

2021 Isuzu MU-X: Everything we know so far

The 2021 Isuzu MU-X will be among the safest and most advanced vehicles in the ute-derived four-wheel-drive class when it goes on sale in the second half of 2021 or the first half of 2022. While Isuzu remains tight-lipped about timing and details for the successor to one of Australia’s top-selling seven-seater four-wheel-drives – and the image above is a computer illustration of how it might look – we have managed to piece together what we can expect, based on the just-released D-Max ute.

2021 Isuzu D-Max: 3.0-litre diesel here to stay, hybrid and 1.9-litre also possible

Isuzu Ute Australia has cemented the new 3.0-litre 4JJ3-TCX diesel engine as the main powertrain of its range in Australia, while a hybrid driveline and smaller diesel option could join it in the future. Based on the outgoing 4JJ1 engine, the new 4JJ3 engine uses a new block, cylinder head and fuel injection system to achieve better power and torque figure of 140kW and 450Nm.

Now, in true 2020 fashion, you can do exactly that from the comfort of your couch, thanks to an update to the Microsoft Forza Horizon 4 computer game. 2020 Mazda CX-30 long-term review: Introduction

If you're a little confused about the 2020 Mazda CX-30 and what it represents in the company's SUV range, you'd easily be forgiven. After all, most brands offer models in at least three size categories: small, medium and large. In Mazda Australia's case that strategy has been represented by the little CX-3, the mid-sized CX-5 and its longer seven-seat sibling the CX-8, and the frankly behemoth CX-9.

The quest for speed: 0-100km/h through the ages

The sprint to 100km/h. It’s been a performance benchmark since, well, since cars could reach the ton. That triple-figure benchmark happened quite quickly too. After a sluggish start with the Benz Patent-Motorwagen of 1885, which had a top speed of 16km/h by the time it had been refined into Model Number 3 in 1888 (a horse-drawn carriage could travel faster), engineering development soon saw cars capable of hitting 100km/h or more.

Widespread price reductions with new Luxury Car Tax threshold, but not from BMW

The introduction of a new Luxury Car Tax threshold has meant widespread price reductions for new models. However, BMW has chosen not to pass-on the savings, despite lower prices being offered by its competitors. In fact, Jeep sold more cars in one month – in December 2014 – than it has sold in the first seven months of 2020.

2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio review

I was warned by not one, not two, but three of my well-meaning colleagues before getting behind the wheel of the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. “In the wrong conditions and with the wrong driver, this can be the most dangerous car on the roads,” one said. “It’s all about getting those tyres warm and staying away from race mode in wet weather,” another suggested. “Just… be careful,” warned another.

But, let’s call a spade a spade: the Outback is a wagon. A jacked-up wagon.

McLaren passed of as Porsche seized in Filipino tax sting

Supermarkets have long claimed that the self-serve checkout system is abused by customers who scan through cheaper items in place of expensive ones, but it appears this scheme has been taken to a whole new level in the Philippines. A McLaren 620R was seized at the Filipino border after it was fraudulently declared to be a much cheaper Porsche Cayman in an attempt to avoid local taxes. That is, according to a recent Facebook post from the country’s Bureau of Customs.
