BMW M3 EV to be similar price to petrol version

Electric and petrol-powered versions of the BMW M3 are due to coexist alongside each other when the new model is due in 2027.

The first-ever electric BMW M3, due in 2027, will be a similar price to the new-generation, twin-turbo six-cylinder petrol version it will be sold alongside.

BMW M head of sales, Sylvia Neubauer, told Autocar that the electric models will differ in powertrain, platform and performance, but not major styling changes or pricing.

“The good news is that from a pricing perspective, they are in the same ballpark,” she said.

The current-generation petrol M3 is priced from $169,100 to $186,900 plus on-road costs as a sedan, with the next model likely to approach $200,000 in all-wheel-drive form.

The new electric M3 will use four electric motors for as much as 1000 horsepower (745kW), though it is thought it may be ‘detuned’ closer to about 500kW.

Meanwhile, the petrol-powered version is expected to tune its 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six above 400kW, in line with special editions of the current model.

While they will sit on different platforms, BMW aims for the cars to vary little in appearance and style, as both are due to wear the brand’s latest Neue Klasse design language.

The petrol M3 will use an updated version of the current CLAR architecture, while the electric car is set to adopt all-new underpinnings developed for battery power only.

Both are likely to share a 17.9-inch touchscreen and full-width Panoramic Vision instrument projection, set to result in even fewer physical buttons.

“It’s not only about acceleration and power, but it’s about drivability, manoeuvrability and that level of trust and connection between the driver, car and road,” Neubauer told Autocar.

“Obviously, we will not convince 100 per cent out of the petrolhead target group to buy an all-electric BMW M3. But out of 100 people that try it, we will be able to convince some.”

For now, the petrol-powered M3 is here to stay, but the manual gearbox currently available in non-Competition models may be dropped to reduce complexity and help meet future emissions rules.

The electric version of the new M3 is due to start production in early 2027, ahead of the petrol model in 2028.
