Nissan Skyline to be rebooted, hinting at GT-R revival

As part of a reset of its high-performance line-up, the iconic Skyline nameplate is being overhauled in a new-generation model.

Nissan has confirmed a new generation of the Skyline sports sedan – most recently the Japanese version of the Infiniti Q50 – as part of a high-performance resurgence poised to eventually revive the GT-R badge.

While most car enthusiasts will associate the Skyline badge with inline-six, all-wheel-drive heroes of the 1980s and 1990s, Nissan applies the name to the Infiniti Q50 luxury car – no longer sold in Australia – in the Japanese market.

With the Q50 and related Skyline now more than 10 years old, Nissan has used a media conference in Japan to confirm a new-generation model set to lean further into the classic lighting and badging cues of past generations.

It is part of a long-term strategy to streamline the global Nissan line-up from 56 models to 45, and focus on top sellers or models that the brand is best known for.

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa told global media the return of the GT-R – long associated with the Skyline, but spun off into its own supercar from 2007 to 2025 – will eventually follow, noting that it remains a symbol of the company.

“GT-R is a priority; it’s not only a car, it’s a symbol… a new GT-R will come,” the executive said, in a media conference attended by Drive.

“Skyline is a Heartbeat model for Japan, delivering performance, precision and driver-focused character.

“The GT-R badge is not something that can be applied to just any vehicle; it is reserved for something truly special and the R35 set the bar high.

“Our vision health is decide where to leave, where to partner and where to stop… [Skyline represents] models embodying Nissan’s identity, emotional value, and innovation.”

The current Q50/Skyline is powered by a 298kW/475Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 used in the Z sports car, with recent reports suggesting it could be matched with a six-speed manual transmission in its next generation, alongside an auto.

The design and performance trajectory of these flagship models has been previously teased through the GT-R-styled Hyper Force concept, which featured a 1000kW all-electric powertrain and a solid-state battery.

Artificial intelligence – planned to feature on 90 per cent of future Nissan models in the long term – is claimed to be a fundamental of this new Skyline, which will serve as a lead vehicle for Nissan AI Drive technology.

Chief Technology Officer Eiichi Akashi told media future models will incorporate autonomous tech through Wayve AI Driver software and next-generation LiDAR sensors.

The reboot of the Skyline arrives at a critical juncture as the company navigates a global sales decline, with February 2026 figures showing a seven point four per cent decrease compared to the previous year.

The Skyline is pitched as a low-volume model to boost interest in the Nissan brand, leaving ‘core’ models like the X-Trail Hybrid and the Europe-focused Juke EV to attract customers en masse.
