Leapmotor A05 breaks cover in China as small electric hatch
Documents filed with a Chinese regulator detail LiDAR sensors and an extensive camera array in the new Leapmotor A05 electric hatchback.
The new Leapmotor A05 electric hatchback has been revealed early through documents filed in China, with one variant of the new small electric car featuring an array of high-tech sensors.
At 4200mm long, 1800mm wide and 1360mm high, the A05 sits between a Volkswagen Polo and Golf in size, and will rival other Chinese electric cars from the MG 4 Urban to the BYD Dolphin.
It is yet to be confirmed if it will be sold in Australia, but reports out of the UK have linked it with a European debut, where small hatchbacks are especially popular.
Two versions of the A05 have been revealed in the documents: an entry-level variant with 70kW, and a top-spec grade with 90kW.

The flagship variant is 110kg heavier, at 1420kg vs 1310kg, suggesting a larger battery might be included.
Filings for the higher-spec model also detail three different options for cameras and sensors mounted near the top of the windscreen: a binocular camera paired with a LiDAR sensor, a front ‘monocular’ camera, or a ‘top camera’.
The LiDAR sensor, expected to enable more advanced semi-autonomous driving features, is depicted as a prominent horizontal bump above the windscreen.

Other extra sensors only available on the high-spec A05 are a “dual rear-view mirror camera” positioned on the car’s side mirrors, along with other small cameras positioned above the car’s wheel arches.
Radar is included as an optional accessory only on the lower-spec version, suggesting it is standard on the higher-spec grade. Optional accessories on both vehicles include different wheel options and two-tone paint.
Leapmotor entered the Australian market at the end of 2024 with the C10 mid-size SUV, and has just launched the B10 small SUV, with the B05 hatch due later this year.
While there is currently no indication that the A05 will come to our shores, the slightly larger Leapmotor A10 small electric SUV is under consideration for the Australian market, under the B03X name.
