Holden Special Vehicles theft and dismantle racket busted in Victoria

An ongoing racket targeting Holden Special Vehicles has been busted, and an HSV Maloo recovered, says Victoria Police.

A stolen Maloo utility recovered in Melbourne’s west was stolen as part of an ongoing racket targeting Gen-F Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) models, Victoria Police alleges, with a man and woman being charged in relation to the thefts.

The stolen HSVs were allegedly stripped and sold for parts in Melton and surrounding areas.

The Maloo recovered in Derimut was allegedly stolen Friday March 13 from a shopping centre carpark in Melton West, after being parked there for only a short time.

A man was charged with seven counts of theft of a motor vehicle and five other related charges. A woman was charged with handling stolen goods, dealing with the proceeds of crime and other offences.

Holden Commodore thefts in Victoria 2005-2025

Holden Commodores and Commodore-based models have consistently remained Victoria’s most stolen car for decades, despite ceasing production in Australia more than eight years ago.

Earlier this week, Victoria Police released new intelligence suggesting most Commodores in 2025 were being stolen with key reprogramming devices that plug into a car’s diagnostic port.

Key reprogramming devices, also sometimes referred to as ‘OBD’ devices, plug into a vehicle’s on-board diagnostics (OBD) port, which feature in most modern cars.

Plugging the device into this diagnostic port allows thieves to overwrite the vehicle’s security by using functions intended for mechanics and locksmiths, such as programming new keys.

Victoria Police have repeatedly called for owners of commonly stolen vehicles to take measures to deter thieves using these devices, such as installing OBD port locks, parking their vehicles off the street if possible, and installing steering wheel locks.

Victoria has experienced increasing car theft in recent years, with rates now double that of NSW. However, monthly car thefts in Victoria began dropping from June to September 2025.
