Electric Toyota HiLux goes unsold at auction, while another example fetches nearly $40K

The remaining two electric Toyota HiLux models from a failed start-up have been offered at auction, with one going unsold.

The anticipated auction of two Toyota HiLux utes converted to electric power by a defunct Western Australia-based company has finished with one selling for just under $40,000, while the other failed to meet its reserve price.

After 126 bids, the electric 2023 Toyota HiLux SR 4×4 dual-cab was sold to a buyer in the remote town of Jiggi, New South Wales, for $39,200.

Meanwhile, after 138 bids, the 2022 Toyota HiLux SR 4×2 dual-cab had a final bid of $24,199, but did not meet the reserve price set.

The two green HiLux models were originally owned by the Mining Electric Vehicle Company (MEVCO).

MEVCO is a now-defunct start-up that aimed to supply mines with electric utes, with these HiLux vehicles sent to auction after MEVCO entered administration late last year, owing millions.

The two HiLux vehicles auctioned were unregisterable due to not meeting Australian Design Rules, according to their listing on the Grays website.

However, buyers interested in a registerable electric HiLux will soon be able to buy one, after Toyota officially revealed the HiLux BEV (battery electric vehicle) in November last year, based on the new-generation model.

The HiLux BEV will be primarily marketed towards fleet buyers such as mining companies, though it will also be available for retail customers.

MEVCO was initially established in 2022 with a focus on electrifying Toyota models, planning to distribute HiLux and LandCruiser utes converted to battery power.

The HiLuxes were converted to electric power by partner firm SEA Electric before, in early 2024, MEVCO shifted focus to instead supply mining companies with left-hand-drive Rivian R1T utes imported from the US.

MEVCO’s remaining stock of Rivian R1Ts was first spotted in Grays‘ Perth auction yard, alongside the electric HiLuxes.

However, the R1Ts were returned to MEVCO’s appointed administrator earlier this year and never went up for auction, leaving their fate unknown for now.
