Public electric car charging cables cut and stolen at shopping centre

Thieves have chopped and stolen cables from six EV charging stations at Cranbourne Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s east.

Thieves have chopped and stolen cables from six electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Cranbourne Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s east.

Vicinity Centres, the shopping centre operator, labelled the theft “disappointing” and told Drive they are working to ensure the cables are replaced as soon as possible.

The theft in Cranbourne comes after a similar robbery in South Australia, where Tesla owners noticed on Sunday morning that charging cables had been cut and stolen at a Supercharger site in Norwood.

Images of the damaged charging stations following both thefts have been widely shared on social media, with users speculating the cables were stolen because they contained valuable copper wiring.

Copper is currently valued at $17.32 per kilogram, according to the online site Market Index.

Despite the ENGIE branding on the Cranbourne Shopping Centre chargers, the damaged Cranbourne chargers are part of a charging network operated by EVSE Australia.

EVSE purchased ENGIE’s charging network in April, and these chargers are yet to be rebranded.
