Matchbox movie to star self-proclaimed ‘car guy’ John Cena
Actor, WWE wrestler, and car enthusiast John Cena is set to take the lead role in Mattel’s new Matchbox movie.
If you enjoyed the films Toys, Cars, and Barbie, then you might be excited about a new production just announced.
Toy company Mattel says a new live-action movie about its miniature Matchbox cars is being made, with John Cena (Fast & Furious 9, The Suicide Squad, Ricky Stanicky) set to star in the leading role.
In partnership with Apple Original Films and Skydance, Mattel – the owner of Matchbox – has revealed the film will be inspired by the die-cast model cars, but hasn’t revealed any details about the storyline.
Cena – who rose to fame as a WWE wrestler – is also known to be an avid car enthusiast, using a blue manual 2020 Honda Civic Type R as his everyday vehicle for years.
“My daily driver is a Civic Type R,” he famously admitted on the Whiskey Ginger podcast.

“It’s got tech. It’s a manual. It’s reliable,” adding he could take passengers – making it more practical than a supercar.
However, in May 2024, Cena posted on social media about trading up to a white 2024 Honda Civic Type R.
“I listen to nothing [when driving],” he told Shannon Sharpe during a recent interview.
“I am a huge car guy, so when I get to drive, it’s kind of my chance to meditate. I always try to drive something manual with a stick shift, and I always just listen to the car,” he admitted.
“I had one rare day off … I drove around the state of Florida, just for shits and giggles. I did 880 miles (1416km) – I left my house in Tampa, went to Orlando, went around ‘the thumb’, went back up, went back down – and as soon as I pulled in my garage I’m like ‘whoa, 880 miles, not too bad!'”

Cena said he left at 4:30 am and pulled into his garage 10:30 pm – stopping at three or four coffee shops along the way – and didn’t turn on his radio or take a phone call during the roadtrip, describing it as his way of meditating.
The actor also had a cameo as a merman in Mattel’s 2023 film Barbie, which grossed over $US1.4 billion worldwide ($AU2 billion).
While a release date hasn’t been announced for the Matchbox movie, it could prove to be just as popular as Barbie, with two Matchbox cars being sold every second somewhere in the world.
