2025 Audi SQ5 TFSI petrol returning to Australia after a four-year hiatus

Petrol power will return to the Audi SQ5 performance SUV in Australia after a four-year hiatus – as an alternative to the current diesel – ahead of the next-generation, petrol-only model’s arrival.

The 2025 Audi SQ5 performance SUV will revive the option of turbo-petrol V6 power – alongside the turbo-diesel V6 – as the current generation nears the end of the road.

Due in early 2025, the SQ5 TFSI is returning after a four-year hiatus at the same price as the turbo-diesel – $119,084 plus on-road costs for the conventional ‘wagon’ body, and $124,315 plus on-roads for the coupe-styled Sportback.

Next year will be the final opportunity to buy a diesel-engined SQ5 TDI in Australia, as Audi’s next-generation model due in late 2025 will be exclusively petrol-powered.

It will be the fifth change to the SQ5’s engine line-up in eight years.

Petrol power replaced diesel when the current, second-generation SQ5 range launched in Australia in 2017, before the TDI returned as a special edition in 2020.

The petrol model was culled from local showrooms with the facelifted SQ5 line-up in 2021, but it remained on sale in markets such as the US, where diesel vehicles are not popular.

Australia is believed to be the only major market globally to offer both engines.

The revived SQ5 TFSI is powered by a 3.0-litre single-turbo petrol V6 developing 260kW and 500Nm – 9kW more, but 200Nm less than the 3.0-litre single-turbo V6 diesel (251kW/700Nm).

Despite the torque deficit, the petrol SQ5 is quicker, with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.9 seconds – against 5.1sec for the TDI.

Audi Australia has also announced a new $2500 Dynamic Black option pack for the SQ5, due in early 2025 for petrol and diesel versions.

It adds 21-inch black five-spoke alloy wheels, a black exterior styling pack including badges, mirror caps and roof rails (on the ‘wagon’ body), black brake calipers, ‘carbon atlas’ interior inlays, and massaging front seats.
