The most popular cars in Australia, by age group
A recent study has identified the most popular cars in Australia by age group – with some models showing cross-generational appeal.
A recent study has revealed Australia’s most popular cars broken down by age group – with certain types of cars showing universal and enduring appeal, while one model was found to rule them all, regardless of demographic.
The study by comparison site Compare the Market used data from Australians who have quoted and compared car insurance policies through its website between 1 July 2023 and 1 July 2024.

While VFACTS data suggests new car buyers in Australia overwhelmingly opt for dual-cab utes, insurance data shows that the rest of the driving population actually favours hatchbacks – with the trusted Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla each making multiple appearances across age groups.
Some interesting outliers on the list of most popular cars include the discontinued Holden Commodore, which hasn’t been made since 2020, the Ford Falcon, which ended production in 2016, and the Mitsubishi Lancer, which has not been on sale in the country since 2017.
Here are the most popular cars in Australia, split by age group.
