Renault launches divorce-based refund guarantee, overseas
The end of a relationship is rarely a positive experience, but Renault wants to make it easier by offering a money-back guarantee if a couple divorces after buying one of its family cars. But is it little more than a PR stunt?
Renault’s UK arm has announced a new program which will allow divorced couples to get a full refund on their car.
So confident is Renault of its Scenic E-Tech electric SUV as a family car – and its ability to improve the lives of its owners – the French car maker has launched Relationship Breakdown Cover.
The guarantee allows couples to receive their money back on a Scenic E-Tech should they divorce or split up.
Research conducted by Renault suggests 21 per cent of British drivers say taking the wrong direction causes the most arguments in their relationship, while 20 per cent say the bickering begins due to poor driving.

Those surveyed also said comfortable seats (42 per cent), a good sound system (26 per cent), and cabin space (26 per cent) accounted for the top-three features said to improve the moods of car occupants when driving.
Three features which, predictably, Renault says the Scenic E-Tech offers.
While the Relationship Breakdown Cover is indeed a public relations campaign – created by PR firm Publicis London on behalf of Renault UK – it is a genuine offer available for retail customers who purchase a new Scenic E-Tech with cash between 1 January and 31 December 2024.
However, as part of the terms and conditions, divorcees – or those ending a civil partnership – must provide court-validated documents as evidence, at least one month after the purchase of the vehicle.

Given it’s the end of July, couples have roughly five months to purchase the Scenic E-Tech, file for divorce, and return their car to redeem the offer. According to the UK Government, it normally takes at least seven months to get a divorce.
The UK also has a relatively low divorce rate of 34.2 per cent, as of 2023.
Though the Scenic E-Tech isn’t sold in Australia at the time of writing, Drive has contacted Renault Australia to find out whether the offer will be extended to local buyers.
