2024 Toyota RAV4 price and specs: Hybrid-only range hikes entry price of top-selling SUV

The Toyota RAV4 is now only available as a hybrid – but prices have climbed by $7000 in five years, with the cheapest model now more than $45,000 drive-away.

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 has gone all-in on hybrid power in Australia – and dropped petrol-only variants – after more than 95 per cent of deliveries used petrol-electric power.

Wait times for the RAV4 have dropped to less than six months, after exceeding two years for in-demand variants in 2022, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduced in its current generation in 2019, Toyota’s top-selling SUV is available in five 2.5-litre hybrid model grades – GX, GXL, XSE, Cruiser and Edge – with front- or all-wheel drive.

RAV4 Edge Hybrid.

Prices start from $42,260 plus on-road costs for the base-model GX front-wheel-drive (FWD) hybrid, and rise to $58,360 for the flagship Edge all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid.

The most affordable hybrid is about $7000 more expensive than it was five years ago, but the deletion of non-hybrid engines and the manual transmission means the cheapest RAV4 is now $11,270 dearer than in mid-2019.

A 2.0-litre petrol engine with front-wheel drive was previously offered – matched with automatic or, prior to 2022, manual transmissions – as well as a 2.5-litre petrol engine in the Edge, with all-wheel drive.

RAV4 Edge Hybrid.

New features added to the GX hybrid in that time include projector LED headlights (replacing reflector-beam LEDs), a 7.0-inch instrument display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, leather-like steering wheel trim, four more USB ports, and updated safety technology software.

The popular RAV4 Cruiser hybrid AWD version has become $9500 dearer, but has gained a 12.3-inch instrument display, larger 10.5-inch touchscreen, ventilated front seats, and digital rear-view mirror, among other extras.

Powering the RAV4 is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine aided by two electric motors to develop 160kW in FWD models, with claimed fuel consumption of 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

RAV4 XSE Hybrid.

AWD versions add another electric motor – used to drive the rear axle – to increase the power output to 163kW, as well as claimed fuel use of 4.8L/100km.

The braked towing capacity ranges from 480kg (FWD) to 1500kg (AWD), while there is up to 580L of boot space – excluding GX variants with full-sized spare wheels – and a 55L fuel tank.

Standard features in the entry-level GX include projector LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/wired Android Auto, 7.0-inch instrument display, push-button start, six speakers, and dual-zone climate control.

A full suite of advanced safety technology is standard across the range, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and traffic sign recognition.

RAV4 Edge Hybrid.

More expensive models add larger alloy wheels, a widescreen 12.3-inch instrument display, larger 10.5-inch touchscreen, leather seats, a sunroof, power tailgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a nine-speaker JBL stereo, and power-adjustable driver’s seat.

2024 Tesla Model Y facelift due mid next year – report

A major update for the world’s best-selling new car is around the corner, with “more obvious” exterior and interior upgrades. What the updated Model Y could look like, illustrated by Theottle.
