2025 Lancia Ypsilon HF electric hot hatch to spawn rally return

The Italian car maker – best known for its dominance in rallying throughout the 1980s – is returning to the hot hatch market with the electric Ypsilon HF, with a rally car to follow.

Weeks after unveiling the Lancia Ypsilon – the first all-new model from the Italian brand in 13 years – an all-electric high-performance version has been shown to the world.

The Ypsilon HF is set to go on sale in Europe in May 2025, using a 54kWh battery to power a 177kW electric motor on the front axle – a powertrain shared with the Abarth 600e and the Alfa Romeo Junior Veloce.

The Ypsilon HF – which stands for High Fidelity, and refers to Lancia’s high-performance models – also features lowered suspension and a widened wheel track to improve handling.

The company has revealed it is developing two new models – the Lancia Delta and Gamma – both of which will be coming with sportier HF variants.

The original Lancia Delta HF was one of the company’s most iconic models, dominating the World Rally Championship between 1987 and 1992, taking 46 victories during that time.

With the reveal of the Ypsilon HF, Lancia has also announced it will be returning to rallying. Lancia is the most successful manufacturer in the World Rally Championship, winning 10 constructors’ titles between 1974 and 1992, but the race-spec Ypsilon Rally 4 HF will compete in the more grass-roots Rally 4 category rather than the top-tier WRC.

However, unlike the road-going electric version, the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol three-cylinder engine – sending 158kW to the front wheels through a five-speed manual and limited-slip differential.

Images show the Ypsilon Rally 4 HF adorned in Martini-esque livery – a throwback to its famous rally cars of the 1980s – along with a roof vent and lightweight alloy wheels.

While there’s been no official announcement of the Lancia Ypsilon being sold in Australia at this point, as reported by Drive in late 2021, the company has plans to create right-hand-drive versions of its new model range with the aim to relaunch in the local market – which would mark a return for the Lancia brand since it left Australia in 1985.
