Updated 2024 Mercedes Sprinter, eSprinter, Vito and eVito van range detailed

Mercedes-Benz’s van range – including the Sprinter, which accounts for 70 per cent of its sales – in Australia is about to receive an overhaul. Here’s what to expect.

The Mercedes-Benz van line-up in Australia is about to undergo its most significant overhaul in some years to help recover a slowdown in sales since the X-Class ute was axed four years ago.

Orders are due to open mid-year – ahead of first deliveries between October and December 2024 – for an updated Vito and Sprinter range, planned to offer diesel and electric versions of both line-ups.

Updates to the Vito are headlined by upgrades to the infotainment and safety systems – while the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter range has gained new technology, and or the first time in Australia, a battery-powered eSprinter version.

Unveiled late last year, the Vito and eVito gain the brand’s MBUX infotainment system, and upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen and 5.5-inch digital instrument display as standard in Europe.

In overseas markets, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless charging are also available on higher grades, as well as the ‘Hey Mercedes’ intelligent voice command feature.

Unique to the electric eVito are some infotainment displays and settings, as well as navigation system which selects the fastest route with the fewest charging stops and shortest charging times – taking into account traffic, weather, route topography, driving range and power consumption.

The 2024 facelift precedes the introduction of replacements for the electric eVito and EQV due in 2026, on a dedicated electric-car architecture known as ‘Van.EA’.

With the facelift, Mercedes-Benz has also included a number of ‘digital extras’ for the Vito in Europe, such as ‘accident and breakdown management’, remote software updates, and vehicle diagnosis.

Overseas, buyers can pair up their Vito or eVito with the Mercedes Me app, allowing them to lock and unlock the vehicle remotely, or turn on the heating or air-conditioning before getting in.

Other features include keyless start as standard in Europe, and an optional heated steering wheel, new centre console, and 360-degree camera.

On the outside, the design has had a refresh – led by a new grille (blocked off in the eVito) and front bumper with larger side air intakes, while new wheel and paint choices are on offer as well.

Standard safety features in Europe include attention assist, driving light assist (including rain sensor), cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with intersection assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, speed sign recognition and a rear-view camera.

Also new is a power-operated tailgate feature on more expensive grades.

The Vito line-up retains panel van, crew van and Tourer body types, and continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive in Europe.

Meanwhile, the eVito offers panel van and Tourer grades overseas, powered by a 60kWh or 90kWh battery paired with an 85kW electric motor. Driving range in the electric Vito is claimed to be between 319km and 381km, depending on the battery chosen.

Meanwhile, the Sprinter – which accounts for about 70 per cent of Mercedes-Benz Vans sales in Australia – has received a set of updates for 2024.

The Sprinter gains an updated version of the MBUX infotainment system – as one of the first Mercedes-Benz vehicles to offer the original software – with faster computing power, better menu navigation, and a more intuitive Hey Mercedes voice assistant, according to the German car giant.

Its list of safety features includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, attention assist, speed sign recognition – including free map data updates for seven years – the Mercedes-Benz emergency call system, cruise control and a rear-view camera for the panel van and Tourer.

The Sprinter continues to use a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing between 84kW and 140kW, mated to either a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic and with a choice of either rear- or all-wheel drive depending on the variant.

It is offered in panel van or cab chassis forms overseas.

The electric eSprinter is claimed to adopt new underpinnings with rear-wheel drive for the first time – under a near-identical body to the previous model – with additional standard features.

These include the MBUX infotainment system and previously-mentioned safety updates, such as ‘moving-off information assist’ to avoid collisions with vehicles in front, ‘sideguard assist’ to help spot pedestrians and cyclists better, and hill start assist.

The platform consists of three modules – front, centre and rear – which allow it to be easily adapted to fit a wide range of variants and body types, Mercedes says.

The new eSprinter can cope with higher payloads, now capable of a gross vehicle weight of 4250 kilograms, and it has an optional trailer coupling allowing for a 2000kg towing capacity.

The electric Sprinter is offered in two body styles and lengths, and three battery sizes – 56kWh, 81kWh and 113kWh – for outputs of 110kW/400Nm to 150kW/400Nm, and a claimed driving range of 233km to 478km.

In Europe, prices for the new Vito start from €36,557 ($AU61,000) for the panel van and €45,888 ($AU76,500) for the Tourer, while the eVito is available as a panel van from €49,441 ($AU82,000) and Tourer from €63,549 ($AU105,500).

Sticker prices for the new Sprinter in Europe start at €43,504 ($AU72,500) for the panel van and €31,896 ($AU53,000) for the cab chassis. The new eSprinter is available as a panel van in three trim levels – base, Pro and Select – from €47,591 ($AU79,000) with a chassis version to come.

In 2023, global sales of electric Mercedes‑Benz vans increased by 51 per cent.

From 2026 the manufacturer plans to have all of its new mid- and large vans powered solely by batteries using a new ‘Van.EA’ architecture, with the proportion of its fleet made up by electric vehicles at more than 50 per cent by 2030.
