2024 MG Cyberster electric car tipped to cost $100,000 in Australia

UK prices have set the scene for the most expensive MG ever sold in Australia – whether under British or Chinese ownership.

Evidence is mounting for the 2024 MG Cyberster electric sports car to wear a $100,000 price tag in Australia when local showroom arrivals commence by the end of this year.

The Cyberster is the first MG sports car since the company came under Chinese ownership 20 years ago – and is tipped to be the most expensive vehicle ever to wear the octagonal badge in Australia.

It has just gone on sale in the UK priced from £54,995 ($AU105,000) for the 250kW rear-wheel-drive version, or £59,995 ($AU115,000) for the 375kW all-wheel-drive model capable of 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.2 seconds.

Chinese prices have given a similar forecast for Australia, as has MG Australia boss Peter Ciao, who told local media late last year that a $100,000 price for the Cyberster was a “good forecast.”

Cars tend to be cheaper in Australia than the UK due to differing sales taxes – the MG 4 XPower electric hot hatch is about 15 per cent more affordable locally than in MG’s original home market.

It would suggest a price range of $90,000 to $105,000 for models equivalent to the UK’s Cyberster Trophy and GT variants, though Chinese prices indicate a broader range spanning $100,000 to $130,000.

All models in the UK use the largest battery offered in the Cyberster globally, a 77kWh pack, matched with a single 250kW/475Nm rear-mounted electric motor in the base Trophy, or dual motors with 375kW/725Nm combined in the GT.

MG UK claims 0-100km/h acceleration times of 5.0 and 3.2 seconds respectively, as well as estimated driving ranges in European WLTP testing of 509km and 444km.

DC fast charging at up to 150kW is claimed to enable a 10 to 80 per cent power-up in 38 minutes, on par with the MG 4 electric hatch fitted with the same battery.

The Cyberster is fitted with Lamborghini-style scissor doors, two seats, and a fabric soft-top roof which can be raised or lowered in 15 seconds at speeds up to about 50km/h.

Models sold in the UK are claimed to benefit from 18 months of suspension tuning in the UK, led by a team based in Longbridge – the site of the company’s last UK factory – who helped develop the MG 4 electric hatch.

Available features include heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, an eight-speaker Bose stereo, dual-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera, and a full suite of crash-avoidance technology.

There are no fewer than four interior displays – a 10.25-inch instrument display, a 7.0-inch auxiliary display to its left, a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen to its right, and another display for air-conditioning controls.

UK buyers are offered 19-inch or 20-inch alloy wheels – depending on model – with Pirelli P Zero tyres and Brembo brakes.

First Australian deliveries of the 2024 MG Cyberster are due in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December).
