Honda issues third worldwide recall for fuel pump failure, 4.5 million cars affected

Honda has issued a third global recall notice for a fuel pump fault affecting more than a dozen models – but the Japanese car-maker’s Australian division is yet to confirm whether locally-delivered cars are included in the 4.5 million vehicles currently impacted.

Japanese car-maker Honda has announced the recall of more than 4.5 million vehicles globally which are affected by a fuel pump failure – the third such time for the same fault since 2020 – but it is not yet clear if Australian cars are impacted.

The recall affects 2018-2020 Model Year examples of the Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V and several other Honda nameplates not sold in Australia – as well as numerous vehicles from its North American luxury-car division, Acura.

While the latest global recall is an expansion of two previous recalls issued both locally and overseas, Honda Australia has not yet responded to Drive’s request for comment as to whether any locally-delivered models are affected.

At present, there is also no recall notice on the Department of Infrastructure’s website.

2020 Honda Civic VTi-LX hatch review

The first Australian recall for the fuel pump failure was issued in July 2020, affecting 22,366 cars across the Accord (MY2018), City (MY2019), Civic (MY2018), CR-V (MY2018-2019), HR-V (MY2018), Jazz (MY2019), Civic Type R (MY2018), and NSX (MY2019) line-up.

Honda’s second Australian recall for the fault came in July 2021, covering 54,300 vehicles from the same model range and expanded to include the 2020 and 2021 Model Years.

In a statement to news agency Reuters, Honda said the replacement fuel pump and its associated parts are denser and have more clearance than those used in previous recalls.

Drive will update this story with comment from Honda Australia once it is available, or an official local recall notice is posted online.
