2024 Tesla Model 3 facelift leaked again, unveiling imminent

Here’s the updated Tesla Model 3 electric car – again – before you’re meant to see it. The formal unveiling could be hours away.

New images of what appears to be the updated 2024 Tesla Model 3 electric vehicle have surfaced online ahead of an unveiling that – according to reports – may be hours away.

Photos posted to social media – including by Spanish forum Cochespias – show what could be promotional imagery planned for Tesla showrooms or its website of the biggest update to the Model 3 since it launched in the US six years ago.

Tesla has not disclosed when it will unveil the updated electric car, however reports out of China claim it may be sometime today, September 1. The timing of these leaks lends weight to those reports.

The updated Model 3 – known to Tesla fans and company insiders as ‘Project Highland’ – is tipped to introduce a refreshed exterior design inspired by the Roadster sports car, as well as a simplified interior design, new trims, and upgrades to the battery.

It is not the first time the vehicle has been seen without camouflage; a leaked image published in April of a black example parked in a warehouse provided a revealing first glimpse under the heavy camouflage that has adorned test vehicles in the US, China and Europe.

However the new photos do provide our first look at the facelifted Model 3’s rear end, which benefits from new tail-lights – which move the reverse lights and indicators from the middle of a large cluster, as with today’s model, to somewhere within the slim C-shaped graphic.

There is also a new lower bumper reminiscent of the larger Model S electric sedan that is no longer sold in Australia.

Other changes will include a restyled front end with slimmer headlights, and new wheel designs.

Pictured on the red car – which is a Long Range model, based on the ‘Dual Motor’ boot badge that lacks the Performance’s red underline – are the new 19-inch ‘Sport’ wheels, while the grey car in the image above appears to sit on the new 18-inch alloys with aero covers.

Interior changes are expected to include the removal of the gear selector stalk in favour of a touch slider on the touchscreen, new-design dashboard and door panels, redesigned seats that may add cooling functionality, multi-colour ambient interior lighting, and a revised steering wheel.

The faux wood dashboard trim in models with black seat upholstery is also set to be axed.

If reports from China are accurate, the official unveiling of the 2024 Tesla Model 3 may be hours away.
