- 10-inch entertainment screens and plush materials inside
The new-generation, two-row 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee has made its full debut overnight, ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2022.
The first all-new Grand Cherokee in 11 years, the new five-seater follows its seven-seat Grand Cherokee L cousin unveiled earlier this year (due locally in early 2022, a delay from previous timing), and shares much of the six- and seven-seat Jeep’s sharper styling, tech-laden cabin, wide safety suite and, exclusive to the five-seater, a plug-in hybrid option.
Australian prices for both models are yet to be confirmed, however expect an increase over the current entry-level, five-seat Grand Cherokee Night Eagle’s $59,950 before on-road costs sticker (or approximately $65,000 drive-away), bringing the price closer to the $70,000 drive-away mark for the new five-seater.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee size and design
Riding on a new platform, the new five-seat Grand Cherokee is larger than its predecessor, but smaller than the new three-row L model, measuring in at 4910mm long and 2150mm wide, with a 2964mm wheelbase – making it 289mm shorter in overall length and 127mm shorter in wheelbase than the three-row version.
Boot space according to US testing methods has risen by 40 litres to 1068L – though that measurement was likely recorded up to the roof, rather than to the window line, as used in markets including Australia – while there’s also more space for passengers in both rows.
The Grand Cherokee’s styling draws from the related Grand Cherokee L and larger, not-for-Australia Wagoneer range, with differences between two- and three-row versions of the SUV comprising different lower front fascias, a unique ‘D’ (rear-most) pillar design, and LED tail-lights connected across the tailgate by a black trim piece.
21-inch wheels and a two-tone roof are available on certain variants.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee interior
Inside, the five-seater’s cabin mirrors its six- or seven-seat counterpart for technology, with a central 10.1-inch touchscreen running the brand’s latest Android Automotive-based Uconnect 5 software – incorporating wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot (for up to eight devices), over-the-air updates, and satellite navigation.
A 10.1-inch configurable digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch head-up display sit in front of the driver, joined by a 10.25-inch multimedia screen for the front passenger – as seen in the full-size Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer – and two entertainment displays for rear passengers.
Other interior highlights include USB-C ports, a digital rear-view mirror, ambient LED lighting, wireless phone charging, multi-zone climate control, an expansive sunroof, a 19-speaker, 950-watt McIntosh sound system, and support for Amazon Alexa voice assistant and Fire TV (Prime Video) streaming services.
A range of leather upholstery options are available – including plush Palermo leather on the flagship Summit Reserve in the US – along with wood and metal inlay surfaces, heated and ventilated seats across both rows, and 16-way power-adjustable front pews with memory, massaging and lumbar.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee engines
Powering most versions of the new Grand Cherokee in the US is a choice of 219kW/353Nm 3.6-litre naturally-aspirated petrol V6 or 266kW/529Nm 5.7-litre naturally-aspirated ‘Hemi’ petrol V8 engines, driving all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmissions. No diesel engine will be offered globally.
The headline act is a new ‘4xe’ plug-in hybrid option – confirmed for Australia along with the core range next year – pairing a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder with two electric motors, a 17kWh battery pack and an eight-speed automatic, for combined outputs of 280kW and 637Nm.
Shared with the Wrangler 4xe not sold in Australia, the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s powertrain is said to be capable of 40km of all-electric driving range, a combined fuel economy rating of 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres, and a maximum driving range of 708km (according to US testing).
Hybrid, Electric and eSave modes are available – the lattermost of which holds the battery charge level until it is needed – as is up to 0.25g of regenerative braking. A set of motor-generator units replace the alternator and transmission torque converter, while underbody skid plates and water sealing allow for a 610mm wading depth (shared across the range).
While no long-range diesel engine is on offer, Jeep says the plug-in hybrid 4xe variant can tow up to 2720kg braked, increasing to 2812kg in 3.6-litre V6 versions, and 3265kg with the 5.7-litre V8. Cylinder deactivation is offered with the V8 for a claimed economy boost of five to 20 per cent across long distances.
The Australian engine range is yet to be confirmed, however the plug-in hybrid 4xe has been locked in for a local launch alongside the core range in the second half of 2022. It’s expected the 3.6-litre V6 will be the sole petrol-only option locally, given the 5.7-litre V8 won’t be available in the larger Grand Cherokee L locally.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee off-road systems
Off the tarmac, buyers can option one of three four-wheel-drive systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II – all fitted with active transfer cases for improved traction. The Quadra-Drive system adds an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
Quadra-Lift air suspension with semi-active damping allows for up to 287mm of ground clearance and 610mm of water fording depth, complemented by a Selec-Terrain drive mode system with Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Mud/Sand modes. The front axle can be engaged or disengaged depending on the conditions.
The off-road-focused Trailhawk variant returns for the new-generation Grand Cherokee, with petrol-powered Trailhawks featuring a Wrangler-like sway bar disconnect for improved articulation, off-road ‘cruise control’ in low-range mode, steel skid plates, red tow hooks, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tyres, and a matte red and black bonnet decal.
Meanwhile, Trailhawk 4xe versions pair the plug-in hybrid powertrain with the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system – including low and high range modes, and a 2.72:1 low-range ratio – plus a 47.4:1 crawl ratio, off-road cruise control, blue tow hooks, blue-accented 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tyres, and a matte blue and black bonnet decal.
Both Trailhawk versions receive Jeep’s ‘Trail Rated’ off-road stamp of approval, with the 4xe variant said to be capable of conquering the gruelling Rubicon Trail in the US on electric power alone.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee safety
Standard active safety features across the US line-up include:
- All-speed autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
- Adaptive cruise control with stop and go (enabling semi-autonomous Level 2 hands-free driving)
- Lane-keep assist
- Lane departure warning
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Rear cross-traffic alert
- Reversing camera with rear parking sensors
- Tyre pressure monitoring
Delving into the options list can add:
- Night-vision camera
- Intersection support for the autonomous emergency braking system
- Drowsy driver detection
- Auto park assist
- 360-degree camera
- Traffic-sign recognition
It’s so far unclear which of these features will be standard or optional in Australia.
When will the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee launch in Australia?
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will arrive in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2022, with both petrol-only and plug-in hybrid versions set to launch alongside (or in close proximity to) one another.
The three-row Grand Cherokee L will beat the two-row into showrooms, due in the first half of next year, a delay from the late 2021 timing previously announced. Both models will undergo local testing and tuning to suit the local market – with the two-row recently snapped on Melbourne streets.
Local prices and specifications will be announced closer to launch.
