2022 Genesis G70 Coupe imagined

In almost no time at all Hyundai’s upmarket arm, Genesis, has built itself from nicer versions of Hyundai cars, to a fully-fledged premium contender. If Genesis wants to play with the likes of Mercedes-Benz and BMW it is missing one key product, for now. A svelte two-door would be the ideal profile-builder, while taking a swipe at the established C-Class and 4 Series coupes.

While the 2020 Toyota C-HR GR Sport may not be a fully loaded performance model in the same way the GR Supra and GR Yaris are, it follows a familiar formula set by plenty of other brands.

With rally royalty Walter Röhrl and Markku Alen behind the wheel, the Lancia 037 propelled the Italian manufacturer to the WRC Manufacturers’ title in 1983, against the might of Audi and its fearsome all-wheel drive Quattro.

2020 Hyundai Venue Elite long-term review: City living

Let me paint a picture of my street for you: it’s narrow, it’s one-way, it’s located five minutes from the city, and it’s close to two major train stations in a busy little enclave. Cars can park on both sides of the road, and because my suburb is constantly in the grips of ongoing construction, the majority of vehicles are huge utes or vans. Rarely can you nose neatly into a park – you typically have to reverse in.

2020 BMW M550i xDrive Pure review

Read the news lately? Barely a day passes without a suggestion that BMW may have lost its way. The storied German brand seems to be doing its best to usurp the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ mantra with perhaps a wordier ‘Really quite good and undoubtedly clever, if only you can get past the design' style slogan. I’ll be the first to admit it’s not quite as catchy, and I’d be concerned… If it weren’t for cars like this.

Toyota Fortuner: the forgotten 4x4 of an otherwise top-selling line-up. The proliferation of small – and perhaps medium – vans in Australia shows that Aussie buyers know what works. Especially when they spend their time running around town. The 2020 Renault Kangoo Maxi slots firmly into that middle ground, and is aiming to take the fight up to the segment-leading Volkswagen Caddy. As part of the overhauled Toyota HiLux range, the two-pronged town ute and country ute Rogue and Rugged X approach continues. While it’s no city car, the 2021 Toyota HiLux Rogue 4x4 is still very much a HiLux, but the equipment on board makes for an almost-sensible urban package… Almost.

Around the tracks: The Rock can't fit into a Porsche Taycan

When we’re not creating it ourselves, the CarAdvice team spends a lot of time finding and consuming motoring content from all over the world. Here’s a handful of the photos, articles, videos or social media posts that most caught our eye last week. Some of them are brand new, others have been online for a while. Enjoy them – just not too much, okay? We knew Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was big, we just didn't know he was 'too large for a Porsche Taycan' big.

Honda put what in the back?

Honda's story is one of clever engineering. Its founder, Soichiro Honda, is recognised as the key protagonist in this tale. He was the sort of guy that held a private pilot's licence aged in his 70s. His wife was equal-minded, also flying planes late into her senior years, too. Honda's famed motorcycles first rose to stardom. During the 1960s, under Soichiro's watch, its American subsidiary sold a million examples in less than 10 years.

2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee S-Limited V8 review

People are holding on to eight-cylinder sedans. Some for reasons of nostalgia, others for the dependability and strength that come from an old-school pushrod V8 engine. Another issue could be the lack of a logical upgrade. Affordable, V8 petrol cars with a dotted line to performance don't really exist anymore.

2020 Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior long-term review: Off-road

We weren’t actually going to punt our long-term 2020 Nissan Navara N-Trek Warrior off-road in this series of long-term updates, but it happened by accident. You already know most of what the Warrior is capable of in an off-road environment, as we’ve tested it before. However, we ended up using it as a support and camera vehicle almost by accident for some other testing, and decided to take another quick look at what makes it such a solid ‘off the shelf’ off-road option.

2020 Toyota Yaris SX review

The Toyota Yaris remains a fairly big name in the world of cars, even if sales of city cars continue to slide. And Toyota has reinforced its faith in the nameplate by applying it to the model’s SUV spin-off, the Yaris Cross. Yet, you could have forgiven anyone for believing the Japanese company had accidentally launched the latest-generation Yaris with the SUV’s pricing. Total recall: Every car recall issued in Australia in 2020 so far – UPDATE

Let’s get one thing out of the way early – taking care of your car’s recall notice is an easy thing to let slide. Despite the urgency of the manufacturers and their sincere warnings about all the awful things that can go wrong if you ignore it, we’re all guilty of occasionally letting a recall service fall down the to-do list. Hot tip: Don’t let that happen. Recalls are issued for a reason and not fulfilling them could see drivers and passengers injured or killed.

Car design needs to go backwards

The automotive industry is one heavily soaked in nostalgia. While we can acknowledge the value of bold design and forward movement, we seem to be constantly reflecting backwards, whining about how things were better back in the relevant decade of your choice. It’s why modern classics continue to rise in value, and why we tend to get more excited about a rusted-out barn find than we often do about a viable new model. The question is: why keep fighting it?

Don’t believe the new Defender is a real Defender? Then this is what you want

Refined. Composed. Quiet. Smooth. Four things that describe the new Land Rover Defender. Four things that are also the antithesis of the old Defender. Mechanically speaking, the new Defender shares only a name and, to a degree, silhouette. Independent suspension, adjustable air springs and a modern aluminium platform make the new model as far removed as you can get from the old Defender.

2020 Jeep Compass Night Eagle long-term review: Introduction

The small- and medium-sized SUV segments are the most popular and competitive in Australia, accounting for one in every five new-car sales so far in 2020. 2021 Lamborghini STO review: Prototype test

You’re right – we’ve been here before. Lamborghini has already created a track-biased Huracan variant in the form of the Performante. One that briefly held the Nürburgring Nordschleife production car lap record, and which was widely regarded as being the range’s equivalent of a Ferrari 488 Pista or McLaren 675LT.

Mini Vision Urbanaut concept revealed as a maxi personal space

The automobile has long been a home away from home, a personal and private space detached from the noise and frustrations of the world around us – and that's the theme Mini is leaning on with its new Urbanaut concept. There's history in the design, though. While the German-owned British brand has worked to develop a concept that make the most of a hands- and attention-free driving future, the result is both predictably van-like – and a subtle nod to the Spiritual Too concept revealed in 1997.

One big part of Subaru’s DNA is its performance side: force-fed flat-four motors with a distinctive warbling exhaust note, which once upon a time had enough mumbo and handling to strike fear into many more prestigious and more expensive performance cars. Subaru has another side, however. While the STi stuff was at the top of the pyramid, the bulk of Subaru's range and popularity over the years was with something of a precursor to the raging SUV phenomenon.

From Paul Simon’s Graceland that lived on infinite repeat in mum’s Peugeot wagon, to a carefully curated TDK D90 mixtape, made up of songs recorded from the radio. You think constructing a playlist on Spotify is rewarding? You've not experienced the thrill of on bootlegging a whole album thanks to the magic of ‘high-speed-dubbing’ on a twin-cassette boom box – while still in Brashs.

It's been a flood of Hyundai news today, with this latest bit following the reveal of the facelifted Kona Electric and fresh teasers for the i30 Sedan N – but of course Hyundai had to go for a hat-trick.

Electric cars should pay their way and sell on merit, not handouts: Kia

Kia Motors Australia – one of the nation’s fastest-growing car brands – says it supports moves to create fairer and more equitable ways to charge road users, whether they are driving an electric vehicle, or one powered by petrol or diesel. The boss of Kia Australia, Damien Meredith, says it’s not fair for owners of petrol and diesel cars to subsidise the rollout of electric cars – and the future tech should sell on its merits rather than being dependent on taxpayer support.

Sporty style, stacks of safety – and the ability to dodge petrol stations. What more could a Corolla buyer ask for? It’s probably safe to say that Australia is now at a point where hybrid-powered cars are entirely unremarkable. You’ll have ridden in one as a taxi or on a ride-share trip, or maybe your office has one as a company car. The silent-operation bits come as no surprise, nor the fact that they’re really just a ‘normal’ car.

That price marks a $3000 saving on the pre-order drive-away price offered in November last year – which may disappoint those early birds, but they will at least receive their orders first. All, however, should begin arriving "before Christmas".

Looking for a Christmas treat? Here are five performance vehicles on sale now

Australia loves a performance car, no questions there. Whether that stems from the tyranny of distance, or our cultural upbringing on Bathurst and V8s, who knows. What we do know is that we still continue to buy the hotted-up versions of regular cars, alongside a healthy amount of two-door sports cars, too.
