2020 Audi A1 review | Small car review

PSA Group: EVs threaten dealer profits

Electric vehicles require less maintenance than cars with internal-combustion engines, with fewer fluids to change and fewer moving parts. That’s good news… but not for automakers. According to the UK's Autocar, PSA Group electric and connected boss, Helen Lees, sees the rise of electric vehicles as being a threat to the automotive industry by virtue of their simplicity.

2020 Audi A1 review

The 2020 Audi A1 is all-new, heavily revised, and undoubtedly delivers a premium entry into the brand, without the premium price. Certainly at the entry point to the range anyway. This is an important category now, too, even for the more high-end premium brands. While Australians love their SUVs – and that shows no signs of abating anytime soon – garnering the attention of the first-time buyer is the crucial step in locking that buyer into long-term loyalty.

2020 Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary review

I almost groaned when I saw my name against the 2020 Nissan 370Z 50th Anniversary I was down to review. Some cars inspire, some are lustful, others have you leaping out of your chair eager to grab the keys and hit the road. On paper, this wasn’t one of them. And yet, from the moment I collected the car from Nissan’s representatives here in Sydney, I was totally beguiled.

Electric car skeptics might be tired of hearing about the slingshot acceleration of battery-powered vehicles – once the wick has been turned up – but here’s a statistic that might put things into perspective. This Nissan Leaf all-wheel-drive prototype has more torque than a Nissan GT-R supercar. For the technically-minded, that’s 680Nm versus 632Nm. And before the keyboard warriors get clicking, yes we know the GT-R trounces the Frankenstein Nissan Leaf for power (419kW versus 227kW).

It's still powered by a 90-degree turbocharged V8 engine with its outputs determined by the FIA's Balance of Performance regulations.

Why don't Australians buy more EVs?

Driving range, price, and limited knowledge of the available choices are three major impediments to improving battery-electric vehicle (EV) take-up in Australia. That’s the quick and unsurprising summary of a market survey from analytics firm Nielsen, called Caught in the Slow Lane, Australian Adoption of Electric Vehicles. As the name suggests, market penetration of electric vehicles in Australia is far lower than most equivalent markets across Europe, Asia and the USA.

2020 Hyundai Tucson review: Active X 2.0 petrol FWD

Autonomous emergency braking. There’s some perception, right or wrong, that AEB fitment thrusts a vehicle’s safety credentials across a black and white threshold from death trap to certifiably safe territory. In the case of the new 2020 Hyundai Tucson Active X (and one-below base Active automatic), the Korean maker’s Forward Collision Avoidance Assist technology is now standard-fitment, whereas in prior versions the SmartSense safety suite was a $2200 option.

For starters, the display on your phone can’t be obscured by a cracked screen – and if your phone battery is flat you still need to produce a physical licence.

Hyundai Kona Electric long-term review: Road trip range test

Every easter my family packs heads down the highway to Moggs Creek, at the start of the Great Ocean Road. Surf, time to read, plenty of nice wine – as traditions go, it's a pretty good one. It's also a neat test of the Kona Electric's range on the highway. Although the claimed real-world range is 450km, we know range stickers can be like fuel economy stickers (ahem, optimistic) in some conditions.

Ford Australia does not know how long it will take to fix a problem with more than 2000 vehicles equipped with single-turbo and twin-turbo versions of its 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine – including some versions of the Ranger ute (pictured). A fault with the high-pressure fuel injectors on the EcoBlue family of turbo diesel engines has forced Ford to stop delivery of 2115 cars across the Ranger dual-cab ute, seven-seat Everest SUV, mid-sized Endura SUV, Transit and Transit Custom van line-ups.

Introduced to the BMW line-up back in 2008, the high-riding model is largely credited with kick-starting a whole new segment for luxuriously equipped premium brand SUV-cum-coupes, the likes of which now include such sought-after rivals like the Audi Q8, Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Range Rover Sport.

Fully driverless cars ‘aren’t even close’, says Toyota

Futuristic driverless personal cars that can operate safely in rain, hail or shine remain a distant reality, says Toyota. However, autonomous ride-share cars restricted to covering certain areas in certain conditions are a very different story, given they're being prepared for commercial sale inside a decade, and could technically operate today as technology demonstrators with some clever “hacking”.

BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM3 Tyre review

Why go to the effort and expense of removing your standard 4WD tyres for some new ones? Because they're better. Not in every sense, but in the ones that count. After a big few days getting an ARB GVM upgrade, bullbar and winch, along with the Norweld tray and canopy installed onto our 2018 Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series, it wasn't long until it was booked in to Solve Offroad in western Sydney, the preferred dealers and specialists in BFGoodrich tyres.

2019 Kia Sorento GT-Line long-term review: Interior space and comfort

Perhaps the most important element of a family SUV is what lies inside. Sure, it needs to be safe, easy to drive with enough performance and handling, but the actual interface of family and machine will be at the innards. With that in mind, let's have a closer look at the interior of our long-termer 2019 Kia Sorento GT-Line. The Sorento GT-Line does get some nice additions for your spend: heated and ventilated front seats, with heated outboard seats in the second row.

Hardcore Raptor-fighting HiLux not in the pipeline

Toyota Australia (TMCA) has no high-performance HiLux derivative to tackle Ford’s Ranger Raptor in the pipeline, though local management acknowledges the “formidable competition” it faces to stay atop the sales charts without one. The current flagship Toyota HiLux is called Rugged X, which features a bunch of 4x4 bits such as rock rails, a snorkel and bash plate, added in Australia once the cars arrive from the Thai plant. It’s $64,490 plus on-road costs. Review is here.

2019 Lexus NX300 Crafted review

The Lexus NX has been on the books for almost six years now, sharing its platform with the previous-generation Toyota RAV4. So, it's not much of a surprise that Lexus is keen to move a few more of these before the model presumably gets an update sometime next year. Enter stage left, the 2019 Lexus NX300 Crafted edition. This limited model comes with extra features, plus the benefit of drive-away pricing and a sharp finance offer, but is it worth spending money on?

2019 Alpina B5 Touring review

"What's an Alpina?" It's rare a car flummoxes my friends and family, but the Alpina B5 had them all perplexed. "So it's a BMW wagon?" (close but not quite, try again champ). "Wait, is it related to Alpine?" (no, Mum). "Why are you so excited about a wagon?" (at this point I started searching for a new girlfriend).

Beyond that, CEO Hakan Sammuelson has told Auto Express it’s a matter of “when” not “if” Volvo chooses to axe internal-combustion engines.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GT review

“Better looks and a far nicer interior, but still the same angry V8 growl,” we wrote about the facelifted 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT range at its international launch back in April 2019. “What’s not to love?” Fast-forward six months, to the local Aussie launch, and it turns out a few ‘nots’ have surfaced. Such as the $50K pricier tip-in point. Or the price hikes across the range. Or, in fact, that not-actually-that-nicer cabin treatment…

Toyota wants everyone to own a tiny sports car

Industry followers know the endless talk of autonomous vans and electric ride-share services taking over congested cities in place of conventional cars. Nissan Cube officially ruled out for Australia

The Nissan Cube might be a cult hit in Australia thanks to thousands of ‘grey import’ used cars across the country, but that’s not enough to convince the Japanese giant to import the box-shaped hatchback as a brand-new model for local showrooms. The Nissan Cube will remain a Japan-only car because the cost of bringing the tiny vehicle up to Australian and European safety standards has been deemed prohibitively expensive.

After covering some of the best automobiles of the 1930s like the Buick Y-Job (1938), the GM Futurliner (1939), and the Stout Scarab (1932-1935), it would be unfair to not include the Phantom Corsair - a one-off prototype with stunning looks and a very interesting story behind it.

2019 Toyota 86 GT manual review: Dynamic Performance Pack

The year is 2012. The original red, yellow and purple Wiggles retired, a minor earthquake 'rocked' Victoria, and we had our first female Prime Minister in office. It was also when the Toyota 86 was launched, and unlike Australian politics, the 86 has remained predictable and consistent. It is essentially a seven-year-old time capsule on wheels, and when it arrived, it was a fun, pure, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Not much has changed.

TRD GR Supra 3000GT Concept teased

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) is preparing a Supra that's been cranked up to 11 for SEMA, having drawn inspiration from a classic Supra concept. At this point we only have a shadowy video to work with, but the Supra 3000GT Concept certainly looks like something special. Down back there's a towering rear wing with a smaller spoiler worked into the bootlid. Although it's tough to tell, it looks like there'll be an angry diffuser as well.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, CLA, GLA recalled

Mercedes-Benz Australia has issued a recall for 2019 model-year A-Class, CLA and GLA vehicles over concerns one of the airbags could detach while driving. "The four lock nuts for fastening the airbag may have been installed incorrectly," the company says in its recall notice.

Toyota Japan has shown off a new range of GR Sport add-ons for the updated C-HR crossover, though it appears at this stage these accessories will only be available in the Japanese domestic market. 2020 BMW M3 leaked

BMW's upcoming 3 Series flagship, the hotted-up 2020 M3, has been snapped on the production line. Finished in Melbourne Red, the car has a set of aggressively-flared arches and a subtle carbon-fibre lip spoiler on the bootlid. The images were published on Bimmerpost. The roof is finished in body colour, which suggests it isn't a carbon-fibre unit. We'd suggest a lighter roof will be optional or offered on higher-spec Competition models, but this hasn't been confirmed by BMW.

New cars are reaching levels of safety never seen before – as figures show the 12 month national average for road deaths has hit a five-year low. However, one of the key life-saving technologies helping drive down deaths on our roads is still not mandated in Australia.

2020 Kia Stinger GT review (with exhaust upgrade)

The hate and vitriol towards Holden ditching the rear-wheel-drive V8 platform was unprecedented, with fans flocking to forums to comment on their move away from the brand. Fortuitously, Kia was working on an apt replacement. A faster, similarly sized sedan capable of epic tank-slappers. But, do you think the vocal minority slaying Holden for killing the rear-wheel-drive Commodore lined up to buy one? Err, not quite.

Electric 'crate motor' turns any classic into an EV

A new plug-and-play 'crate motor' promises to turn essentially any car into an electric vehicle. The market for electrified classic vehicles is growing, thanks to cars like the Jaguar E-Type Zero and the Aston Martin DB5 EV that starred at the 2018 Royal Wedding. Homemade conversions with repurposed Tesla batteries are also becoming increasingly common. Swindon Powertrain wants to make it easier for low-volume manufacturers to create electric versions of classic, rare, and unique vehicles.

Historic vehicle association against electric drivetrain conversions

The global body representing historic car clubs has come out against the growing trend of fitting electric drivetrains to classic cars. FIVA (Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens or International Federation for Historic Vehicles) stated it "cannot promote, to owners or regulators, the use of modern EV components ... to replace a historic vehicle’s powertrain" as it is an "organisation dedicated to the preservation, protection and promotion of historic vehicles".

Skoda EV: First prototype spied

A development prototype believed to be the production version of Skoda's first electric vehicle has been spied at the Nurburgring this week, ahead of a likely debut later next year. "But, wait. It's a Volkswagen Tiguan!" However, this particular Tiguan has been stretched slightly and is wearing stickers that indicate it's running an electric powertrain – we already know Volkswagen is only doing standalone 'ID.' electric vehicles from now on, so this isn't previewing an electric Tiguan.

Jaguar Land Rover not for sale: Tata

It’s no secret Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been having some troubles lately. Even in the light of slowing sales, poor financial results, and Brexit uncertainty, however, corporate parent Tata Motors is sticking with the British brands. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Motors’s holding company Tata Sons Ltd, told Bloomberg that Jaguar Land Rover isn’t for sale, pushing back on reports the Indian conglomerate was planning on selling the British brands.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited review

Compared to most other 4WDs, Jeep has a huge range of Grand Cherokee variants available. The Trailhawk is the off-road specialist, while the TrackHawk is a bona-fide mental performance option. The SRT is a slightly less crazy take on brawny V8 power, while the Overland and Summit represent fully stacked, less specialised options. Go all out and you can blow over $130,000.

Sideways at 130km/h with drift king Keiichi Tsuchiya

Coming on to the main straight of Sydney Motorsport Park at around 130km/h is something I’ve done before. Never sideways though. Luckily, it’s drift king Keiichi Tsuchiya behind the wheel, not me. I’m strapped into the passenger seat of a Toyota Supra GR while ‘KT’ is doing the wheelwork and flinging Toyota’s halo car into a perfect four-wheel drift.

2019 Genesis G70 3.3T Sport review

Hyundai cracked the mainstream market a long time ago, but can the South Korean brand make its mark in the luxury segment? Being serious about luxury cars means being serious about taking on the ‘volume’ mid-sized executive sedans from Germany, the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. So, put aside the G80 that’s essentially a facelift of the car we previously knew in Australia as the Hyundai Genesis – the first model of note is undoubtedly the G70.

Mazda: Company's first electric vehicle will be a 'coupe SUV'

Mazda is set to debut its first electric vehicle at the 2019 Tokyo motor show next week, and the latest teaser has confirmed it will be a crossover. Jaguar reveals I-Pace Race eTaxi for the Nürburgring

Jaguar has added a new vehicle to its Nurburgring Race Taxi fleet, in the form of its all-electric I-Pace crossover. It's the first time a manufacturer has offered an electric vehicle to cart patrons around Germany's iconic race circuit, not that its zero-emissions credentials mean it'll be slow around a track. Jaguar is confident the I-Pace's 400PS (294kW)/696Nm dual-motor electric drive system "will be able to cope with any conditions the circuit known as the ‘Green Hell’ has to offer".

Mercedes-AMG C63: Next-gen to get 4cyl PHEV power - report

2020 Audi SQ2 review: Quick drive

The exclusively Audi convoy we were driving in Germany recently included the upcoming SQ5 TDI, A6 allroad quattro, and the yet-to-be-confirmed SQ2. I can’t tell you exactly why, but the go-fast Q2 wasn’t something I was all that keen on. At least, not on this occasion that included plenty of derestricted Autobahn.

2021 Genesis GV70 spied

Spy photographers have captured the first photos of the upcoming Genesis GV70 crossover undergoing testing at the Nürburgring. Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis launched with three sedans, the G70, G80 and (in other markets) the G90. All are capable, elegant luxury sedans but they’re just that – sedans. To truly make an impact in the luxury market, the fledgling brand needs to develop crossovers. Fortunately, it’s doing just that.

As an ultra-luxurious limousine? Anthony Crawford finds out.

Despite being classified as a compact SUV, the Kia Seltos sits between the Hyundai Kona (with which it shares its platform) and the larger Kia Sportage.

2020 Kia Seltos review

Some would say Kia is a little late to the party with its compact SUV, the Seltos, but get behind the wheel and that thought dissipates. Regardless of timing, the not-so-compact Seltos appears to be worth the wait. If you’re wondering, the Seltos name is really meant to be Celtus, the Greek name for the son of Heracles. But Kia SUV badges all start with S (Sportage, Sorento), so someone in the marketing department decided it'd be smart to misspell it.

Tyre review: Kumho Ecsta PA51

It’s almost a cardinal sin, but in general most of us don’t give the tyres on our cars too much thought, except for when the time comes to replace them. Then, we can experience ‘tyre shock’, as Korean brand Kumho terms it. High-end performance tyres don’t come cheap, and replacing a full set of boots can, in some cases, set you back anywhere from $2500–$3500, depending on the brand, size and specification.

The Principality of Monaco on the French Riviera has a current area of just 2.02km, making it the second-smallest country in the world after Vatican City. It’s also the most densely populated sovereign state in the world, with more than 40,000 mostly high-net-worth individuals crammed into that tiny piece of land. Think about that for a moment.

2020 Chevrolet Corvette (C8) review

The mid-engined Corvette was a meme long before the internet was invented. For some time, the previous-generation C7 ’Vette was even supposed to make the switch, but the project was canned by GM’s bankruptcy in 2009. Now it’s finally here, and CarAdvice has already had a go in one in Michigan.
